This trail was fun and magical! I would recommend it for anyone who likes to explore! All of the trails from the side parking lot pass the lake and continue to the rock steps. There are several side and main trails from there!

Hiked on 07/09/20. Overall, this is a pretty moderate hike with one hard part in the middle, with some unfortunate extra distance at the end due to a trail closure. I started at about 7:20am with 4 liters of water and other gear in my pack. The first part of the trail is somewhat difficult to follow due to a lot of intersecting trails, so make sure you bring a map or have the AllTrails map on your phone. The part of the hike in Red Rock Canyon Open Space is minimally shaded, so make sure you bring sunscreen if needed. Once you get to the fork in the trail a little after 3 miles, make sure you take the left path, not the right one. The right one is for when you are returning after the section 16 loop. While on the Section 16 loop, you'll encounter the reason that the hike is rated hard. Near the middle of the hike, you gain about 1,000 feet of elevation in a mile over rocky terrain. I've definitely done worse, but it still worked up a good sweat. Once you get on top, it's smooth sailing for a long time. The next 3.6 miles are all downhill over pretty smooth terrain. The landscape offers a lot of nice views and is a pleasant walk. You'll turn onto Gold Camp Road and start heading back towards Red Rock Canyon, and you'll have to walk on the paved road for a short time. After that, it's generally rolling hills, nothing too crazy. However, once you get near where the trail says you should intersect with the trail you started out on, that connecting trail is closed for re-vegetation and it is illegal to hike on it. That requires you to take a variety of trails (Red Rock Canyon Overlook Trail, Intemann Trail, Section 16 Connector, Mesa Trail, Roundup Trail, etc) to get back to the Lion Trail and onto the path marked by AllTrails. That adds about 2.25 miles to your hike. I finished at about 12:15pm, having gone through 3.5 liters of water (it was about 92 degrees out when I finished). The trail has a lot of great scenery and is pretty moderate other than the hill, my only complaints are that the AllTrails map route is not quite possible (unless you want to hike the connecting trail illegally), adding extra distance that I hadn't planned on.

Quarry pond not really worth the walk, that said, there are a few shaded spots to just sit and relax if you just want something outdoors.

Ran the perimeter and overlook trail. Had to stop and check the map to make sure I was turning the right way just about every turn.

The trail was very easy to find. Although there is plenty of space to walk with your four legged friends, I would not recommend it during the summer months as it is hot with very little shade It is heavily used, so if you don’t like people you might want to stay away from this trail The lake is very pretty and the red rock backdrop makes for great photo shoots

Got to see a different part of red rocks than usual. Nice jaunt lots of green and not too many people. A little elevation gain but easy for me and my wife carrying a newborn.

Enjoyed this hike, but went off trail quite a few times. I’m a beginner and had some trouble navigating a few times. Quite a few people on the trail from 8-10am, but a few stretches of solitude. Most of the trail is not shaded. Some nice breezes at times. Saw a deer & a few pretty birds. Fairly suitable for beginners, as there are no major inclines & the majority of the trail is wide & clear. Several beautiful outlooks where you can see Garden of the Gods in the distance. This was a good balance of challenge for a beginner.

Good trail with great views. I exercise every day so it was an easy hike for me. My daughter and husband, who aren't as active, thought it was a good workout. Highly recommend!

Beautiful views. Multiple trails- hard to follow if you’re trying to find the lake. Enjoyed the trails over all, but my pup struggled in the heat, so keep that in mind if you’re taking your pooch.

Beautiful easy hike with little to no shade. Biggest suggestion is that they add garbage cans as the trails are used by Forrest rangers and their trucks so it would be easily collected. As a dog owner I was disgusted by how many irresponsible litter bugs took the time to actually bag their dogs crap and then left said bags littered along the trail! Seriously?!?!
