The road is currently pretty impassible. I tried to get out there today with my 4WD Wrangler and ended up getting stuck in the deep snow along the sides. You could maybe get out there with a snowmobile or a 4WD that has chains but the snow really makes you fishtail, is slushy and deep in a lot of places, and feels like it's going to throw you off the road. The drive toward Yampa was gorgeous though so I can't wait until summer when the snow is gone to get back out here!

The trail is narrow and somewhat steep at parts, making for a good challenge. It was well packed and microspikes worked great! Didn’t make it to the lake, but there were some beautiful views along the way. About half way up it clears and levels a bit for some beautiful views. Waterfall is at the base

I haven't hiked it yet. I am considering it for a wedding site in Sept. how is the hike in Sept? flowers?? aspen trees??

thank you

Amazing trail!!
Unfortunat there was no path anymore a 1/2mile before the 2nd waterfall so i navigated with GPS
It took me 2 days in a row making my way through knee deep snow to get 3/5 of the way to the lake.
I hope that someone wil follow my path soon before fresh snow and wind covers it en finishes it for me to the lake!!
So bummed that im leaving en cant finnish it myself tomorrow :(
Please let me know if you did!

Best Winter trail

as 11/25/17 trail ends at 4 miles (9400 feet)
the first half is very icy...where studs and bring poles!

Great hike. Garmin has it at 10.7 miles. Starting to get a little windy and cool. Make sure you start early because by noon rain clouds and lightning develop. It took us roughly 5 1/2 hours to do the round trip with stops and lunch. It is approximately an hour and a half drive to trail head from Steamboat Springs. Elk hunting season has started so be aware this is a heavily hunted area and you may want to avoid it during rifle season.

This trail has it all, falls, steep slopes, rock climbing for kids, bridges and it is highly trafficked. The whole family loved it!

Lovely fall leaves on this trail today. The lake was beautiful, would highly recommend checking it out!

Challenging first half of the hike and the causeway is a bit scary but it's all well worth it!

Aspen were perfect ... long hike up and down. 100mi runners at Long Lake.

Beautiful trail with many streams and varied terrain. One of the best in the Zirkle Wildernesses

Great hike. Great view. Great for prepping for narrow bridges, in my case Angels Landing in Zion next week :) I only did thru the causeway and back which was around 6 miles + round trip. No protection from lightening/storms, make sure you weather watch. Relatively easy/moderate hike, until the last 1.8ish miles which is up up up. Lots of sheep on the trail, so if you have dogs, be sure to leash up, the herding dogs are very vocal. More info, this is the best website:

There are no real signs, so please remember to stay right at both forks to complete the loop

I highly recommend this hike for the diversity of the landscapes you get to see along the way. The altitude was a little hard for me but you can take your time and enjoy the view. This was my first trip to the Flat Tops and I can't wait to go back.

Astounding hike. We did the 10 mile loop in ~6 hours, including lunch breaks and a ton of stops for us unaccustomed to the altitude. the hike to DC was demanding but beautiful. the causeway itself was maybe the most terrifying thing I've ever done, but the feeling you get afterwards is incredible. The back 6 miles are incredible and easy, and you're rewarded with some solitude after the DC crossing. can't recommend it enough

Easy hike, Lake is pretty! Fish were jumping the whole time!

Great views from the top back across the valley. Lots of elevation gain for the second half but it was worth it.

Very enjoyable hike. I don't exactly agree with Hard rating for difficulty. Moderate would be more accurate. The three lakes at the top were gorgeous and the water was crystal clear. Next time I'll bring my fishing pole, the trout were jumping everywhere!

Wow! Trail was not too bad. Got steep about the last mile as you are nearing Gilpin Lake.

Such a great experience! Scary crossing the causeway, but an adrenaline rush for sure. Definitely longer than 10.1 miles. We logged nearly 14 miles for this trail.

long but awesome. saw a grizzly so bring blow horn or pistol. bring lunch. jumped into the snow melt lake and lasted 5 seconds but refreshing.

Moderate hike with little traffic and a Great Lake payoff. The bald eagle at the top was a nice bonus. Be prepared to drive on a dirt road for a decent stretch before you arrive at the trail head.

Turn-off from 40 is open as of 8/12/17. FS road: recommend high clearance vehicle or 4WD if muddy. Good hike.

Just hiked up to the devils causeway and back down last weekend. Mosquitos weren't bad at all, flys were more bothersome. Got up and down in 2hr 40min. Unique hike

Great hike...... unfortunately, thunder clouds rolled in and at about 75% complete, we ended up turned back.

We started from Dumont lake and it was about 5.5 miles to Fishhook lake. Wild flowers were incredible! After our trip we drove up base camp road and it was pretty gnarly in some spots and some serious mud to get through after two heavy thundershowers passed through, but we made it my subi SUV. Lots of mountain bikers on the trail. Beautiful hike and great for backpacking. You may even meet some folks doing the CDT from Mexico to Canada.

So beautiful! steep and rocky and some parts, gentle and woodsy on others. Lots of people today! Took my daughter and me about 3 hours round-trip taking our time to enjoy the air and scenery. This would be magnificent in the Fall with all the Aspen trees.

I hiked from the Slavonia trailhead to Gilpin Lake and back. It was 10.5 miles roundtrip. Took about 4.5 hours hiking plus 1.5 hour relaxing at the lake. Pretty highly trafficked. When you get to the fork just past the trailhead, go left (counterclockwise) to head towards Gilpin Lake. The first 4 miles up were easy, the last 1.25 pretty strenuous (more difficult due to altitude). Be sure to drink and bring ample water and snacks! Absolutely STUNNING hike! Crossing streams, meadows with wildflowers and aspen groves! My favorite hike all time!!

If you get the chance - swim in the lake! Such an amazing experience. Cold but so refreshing for the hike back down! This is a MUST DO in steamboat!
