Horsetooth Falls and Horsetooth Rock Trail is one of the best hiking trails for all user types close to Fort Collins, with varying treed landscapes to open trail with no shade. Since this is one of the most popular trails in this area, users should arrive early or plan for it to be busy. This route is also a multi-use trail with both hikers and bikes in the summer months, and snowshoers and winter hikers in the cooler seasons. Everyone is courteous and bike riders are usually careful, so be sure to stick to one side of the trail when busy. It is pretty common to see wildlife such as Bull Snakes, Deer and Wild turkey, along with plenty of birds. Larger and venomous snakes are normally found at lower elevations, especially close to the Horsetooth Reservoir. This is the route from the Parking Lot to Horsetooth Rock Summit via Horsetooth Falls Trail, then follows the trail 2.5 miles back to the parking lot via Horsetooth Rock Trail. Users really enjoy this loop, particularly Horsetooth Falls Trail and Spring Creek Trail. Since this route does enter areas with limited shade, it is ideal to bring plenty of water since it can be easy to get dehydrated or overheated in the summer months. During the summer months, rangers patrol the parking area and prevent cars from entering when full. Normally, the parking is full before 8:00 MT, and children under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult of 21 years or older. There is an $9 car permit fee for out-of-town visitors.Show more

This addition to Horsetooth Mountain Park can be found just northwest of Inlet Bay at Horsetooth Reservoir, nestled against the eastern slope of Horsetooth Mountain. This is the former home of one of Larimer County's pioneer families. Prior to European settlers, this was the land of the Cheyenne and Arapahoe.Show more
