The tallest dunes in North America are up to 750 feet tall and neighbor grasslands, shrublands and wetlands. They were formed by sand deposits of the Rio Grande on the San Luis Valley, and the park also has alpine lakes, six 13,000-foot mountains, and ancient forests.

Did this as a sunrise hike, started at 4 AM and made it to the top by 6 AM with some breaks. Tough stuff!! Every step feels like you are taking 3 due to the sand. Pretty spectacular views and sunrise was great. We had the entire dune to ourselves.

This trail is very easy. We just hiked it a few days ago and the worst part are the mosquitos but we knew to expect that coming in. It is also a bit overgrown so wear leggings instead of shorts. The view at the end gives a different perspective and is beautiful. 1 mile easy in and out hike.

Brutal. This is possibly one of the hardest hikes I’ve done. It’s completely exposed and moving sand. Also it’s more like 1000 ft of elevation change. It was amazing getting to the top 10/10 would do again!

Mosquitos were crazy! Wild flowers beautiful though, each prettier than the next!

This park is amazing. We did an evening hike the day before tackling High Dune. We left the lot around 8:30 and we're on top by 9:45, although that was the toughest hour and 15 minute hike we ever did. upon reaching the top, we hung out for almost an hour taking it all in. Cooled off in the creek afterward. Bring water, plan on a slow pace and sport sandals help especially later when the sand heats up.

Beautiful Flowers along the trail and there were some great sights of the dunes, however... OMG the mosquitoes were vicious, for about a mile there are swarms of mosquitoes that will bite you even if you are wearing bug repellent . First half is a bit steeper and the second half levels out.

Amazing views from the top of the dunes however the be forewarned the climb is difficult. Much more so than regular hiking elevation gains due to the soft sand. Definitely bring water with you and trek it with fresh legs if possible. As others have mentioned, if it is sunny the sand can be very hot on bare feet.

A lot of kids and people use it as a beach. You'll have to walk through water where everyone playing. Place is amazing, tough hike due to you sink in sand when you step. The views are amazing.

A great workout. The views from the top are beautiful. When you reach the highest point you realize there are higher ones behind it, I would recommend going to those. Also go EARLY - it gets packed very fast. Parking fills up quick and the line just to get in the park will get backed up for miles. Also try to go when it is overcast, the sun makes the sand very hot.

GORGEOUS views of the Dunes at the top and a really fun hike! It had a huge novelty factor for us since we had never been to any sand dunes before. The “trail” doesn’t really exist: you kind of just follow other people to the top of whatever peak you want. You can’t go wrong, the views are beautiful throughout (especially with the mountains in the background). Bring something to slide down the slopes on, we didn’t and regretted it. TIPS: I recommend walking along the ridges-the sand is packed down and easier to walk on without sliding. I also HIGHLY recommend getting there early (like before 8am). We got there at 7:30 and had no trouble finding parking, but when we came down the Dunes at 10am there was already a big line out of the parking lot and cars were parked way outside the lot on the side of the road. Plus the weather is really nice in the morning since doesn’t get too hot yet.

Beautiful and well maintained mountain trail with far-away views of the Dunes on the way back. BRING BUGSPRAY: we only made it about halfway in before the swarms (yes SWARMS) of mosquitos forced us back to the trailhead. We got to the trailhead at around noon and there were plenty of open spots. Definitely recommend hiking this in addition to exploring the Dunes—you get the best of both of the landscapes in the Great Sand Dunes National park!

What a workout! We crossed Medano Creek in bare feet with no problem. Used my bandana to dry off and put hiking shoes on. The sand is hot and loose, so hiking is challenging but oh so worth it. Find your way along the ridges and look for areas of firm sand. I had to bear crawl the last 20 feet, but it was fun! Be prepared for wind and sunshine!

Water levels are unusually high for this time of year (late June), so the parking lot and the creek were packed with families. Tried to find solitude by walking further up the creek in our Tevas and then crossing over into the dunes. That was a mistake. The sand wasn’t compacted, which meant our open-toed shoes dug further into the dunes and VERY HOT sand buried our feet. We sprint downhill and started following the crowds of people headed uphill where the sand was more compact. In the future, we’ll put hiking boots back on once we’ve waded the creek and then climb the dunes.

Gorgeous views. Runs along a creek. Starts off a tad steep and rocky. Trail gets a bit tight yet opens up very nice after a couple miles. Easy enough to do a nice long jog.

Beautiful trail BUT we had to turn around .2 miles in because we were swarmed with mosquitos. Absolutely bring bug spray or it will be unbearable

What a fun way to spend a Saturday (6.15.19). The water was surging in the creek, so it honestly felt like a state park with the amount of people, tents and Floaties. As you climb, however, it’s quite less crowded. It’s awesome To go up and explore, but it is NOT easy to follow any “trails” to a specific dune. We packed hiking boots and socks, but at sometimes it was easier to hike barefoot (if you’re there early when the sand isn’t hot). I ended up going down only in socks, which was so fun. Pack LOTS of water- it’s toasty up there. Also note: you have to cross the creek to get to the dunes, so barefoot with a towel is a good call. Great experience, so much fun to play on the dunes and the creek is a perfect lunch spot after

You just kind of follow the ridges up to the highest dune. Be sure to wear long pants because the wind is very strong at the top.

Awesome trail! We didn’t go the whole way due to lack of time but got stunning views of the Valley and only passed two other hikers. Our pup enjoyed splashing in the stream and the cool morning air. Well maintained trail with plenty of parking at the trailhead. Loved it!

Took about 20 mins. on the short loop. Very cute and shady!

Amazing trek up the sand dunes. For every step forward you slide half a step back on the steeper points. Worth it for the views and sandboarding

It’s not really a trail. You kind of just walk wherever considering they are dunes but it’s incredibly worth it. If you plan to go to the highest dunes, it’s best to wear pants, long sleeves, and some sort of eye protection. When the winds get rough, that sand hurts like pins and needles!
