Just hiked up to Surprise lake. heavy bugs!!? Great hike, fish are biting! Spent the night all by ourselves at the lake HEL YEAH! Tried to go to Upper Cataract, after the trail split for Upper Cataract it was heavy snow. We turned around after 1.3 miles

Road to lake is closed to vehicle traffic til June 20. It is a 5 mile hike down the road to get to trailhead.

The beginning of the trail is extremely lush. So much greenery to look at! As you head up the trail, you have a steady gain. The first 3 miles of the trail is clear of snow. The only obstacle are downed trees that you can climb over to get back on the path. The last 1/4 of the trip has quite a bit of post-holing. My group and I were unable to get to the lakes due to dense snow around 700ft from the lake. I would say the trail would be good to go with a couple weeks to a month of good melting! But absolutely beautiful with wildflowers starting to bloom and breathtaking views!!! A must do.

Beautiful trail, but it's a fairly steep and constant incline for the first mile and a half. I turned around once I got high enough to hit significant snow.

Tried to backpack 2 weeks ago, and couldn’t even make it to Surprise Lake with how much snow there still was. Waist deep post holing until we made the decision to turn around. Would love to try again in a few more weeks!

Most snow and mud gone.

Trail was covered in snow about 2.5 miles in on 5/30. Didn't want to posthole the last couple miles so I turned around and did lily pad lake

Went up 1 mile today. Trail was in decent "Spring shape". Muddy but passable . . . stopped at that first meadow.

Left early. Only saw 1 other person on the trail. About 2.5 miles in it gets too snowy to continue... still a beautiful hike though!

Snow is 98% gone...few small patches to walk over. Lots of downed trees to climb over/under. Some wildflowers starting to bloom. Nice early season hike today.

I was very glad that my phone was charged and there was some service back there because I got off trail four times. There was some snow, enough to slow you down but not enough to need gear. Two of the four times I lost the trail was at the creek crossing. It’s a web of fallen trees and water back there. Between that and the snow, my shoes were soaked. Make sure to have a good shoe/sock combo to avoid blisters. Generally a decent hike, though no vistas to speak of.

Not quite ready. Tried to hike a week ago. Still lots of snow, barely made it to surprise lake. Love this hike otherwise, still rated 5 stars

Was the most beautiful hike I’ve ever done! With a light dusting of snow the night before it was a winter hike without the winter temps. There were large puddles and downed trees to crawl over that added to the fun.

trail turned very muddy and snowy at about the 2.2mi mark...

Great day hike. Packed snow about a mile from the falls. Slows you down a bit but doable in running shoes. Poles or spikes recommended for additional stability. Highly recommend!

Beautiful hike. Snow up towards the last mile or so of the trail, otherwise just some muddy spots along the way.

Road to trailhead is still closed as of 5/26/2020

It’s muddy and there’s still quite a bit of snow the last 1/2 mile or so but it’s doable. The view at the end is beautiful!
