horseback riding

One of the most beautiful trails I’ve been on in a while, and only about 25 min from Old Town. Great trail for horses, not too rocky and some areas are flat enough that you can pick up the pace. Not crowded, especially if you go in the evening. Parking lot is also easy to get to and park in with a horse trailer.

Easy. Horses can gait almost the entire trail. Good conditioning trail for horses. Gates to open and one big bridge to cross! If you ride the canyon trail, you can cross several Little water crossings. Check the bridge for rattle snakes!

pretty area. was actually 5.37 miles not 4.9 miles. I got around 1300 feet of elevation gain verses 800 something. there is absolutely zero shade on this trail! it seems it would be better to do in fall or spring or maybe even winter. the weeds around the trail are pretty high so you need to be cautious for snakes. about 1.5 miles in there is the river you could cool off in or dogs could cool off in before you go onto OT trail loop.

Really enjoyed this one. I could see it being brutal in the really warm months, though. Pretty sure we seen some eagles as they were obviously huge even though they were really high above us. Too bad I didn't being binoculars to verify!

This was lovely and we only saw one person all morning! Watch out for the cows!

Easy hike, but pretty! Perfect for a family trip (our kids are 3 yo & 5 yo)

Nice views of the foothills and the river. I’m glad I did this trail in cold weather, no shade whatsoever.

Protect yourself from the sun, there are no trees. Good panoramic views. Unfortunately saw no eagles

I would recommend this trail for a nice easy hike. Went with my leashed dog and everyone else seemed to follow the leash rule with their dogs. Lots of horseback riders.

This is a mostly easy hike, just seems long. The views are pretty and sweeping. Not much shade. It's mostly exposed.

Went to the bridge and back because the town was working on the gate. Looking forward to running this trail.

good hike down to the water. Came across a rattle snake so watch for them.

This trail is beautiful!! Amazing views. I’d recommend doing the whole thing, including the OT trail. If you start to the left on the trailhead it has more of a steep decline. And then if you come up on the right side of the triple trail, it is a service road. Not hard at all, I will definitely be back for trail running.

Good hike. Only ran into two other couples hiking on the trail and a few horseback riders.

Out on Sunday morning 11/12/17. Trail well marked. Horses and dogs on leash allowed. No mountain biking. Parts of the trail were muddy where sun had thawed the ground. Other parts, still frozen or decomposed granite. Did the entire loop. Saw only one large bird sorring in the sky above, two groups on horseback, and four couples on the entire walk. Water still running under the bridge on the trail. Nice hike for some good exercise and serenity.

Good trail with excellent views and a nice river crossing midway through. We went left from the trailhead and it was a steeper decline than you experience anywhere else on the trail. We did the OT loop also -- totally worth it!

Long drive from UW to Longmont. Needed a trail run. Nice, runnable trail. Got about 6 quick miles in.

Nice enjoyable hike on a warm February day. The north side of the loop is a little more boring than the south. You go through about eight or nine gates over the course of the hike. Saw more horseback riders than hikers.

Would have been easy if I wasn't sore from doing Hanging Lake trail the day before..... Took the north side to the river and took the south side back to the parking lot. I don't think it really matters which you take because you have to go up eventually both ways. It was a beautiful November day so the sun wasn't too hot but I could see how that could be an issue other times. Will be back for sure but will bring a picnic with me next time.

It's named Eagles Nest for a reason. Don't forget to look up. You might spot the Golden Eagles. The scenery is beautiful. The trail isn't that hard but since there's no shade it can feel a lot more challenging than it is. It is a loop, and the trail will feel vastly different depending on which way you start out so choose wisely. I like to start on the gradual uphill first (on the East side). It goes up gradually and has a steep downhill section, but the last section of the trail is going upward with no shade. It can be challenging with the sun eating on you. Many people prefer to start by going down that section (starting on the west-going down the dirt road first rather than last). If you take your dogs, watch out for rattlesnakes and bring plenty of water for them.

This trail was actually kind of moderate for my out-of-shape, city girl body. Glad I took the left branch first as it had the steepest incline down into the valley to the river. Beautiful views all along the trail. There's actually two loops, I think if I'd have just done the 3.4 mile three bar loop it wouldn't have wiped me out, but I also did the 1.8 mile OT loop and so the last 2 miles back to the car were energy zapping. No shade out there so remember sun screen and water. I'd like to go again when I get a little more used to hiking.

Nice, isolated park and trail system that features beautiful three-hundred and sixty degree views of mountains with a river crossing.
