This trail was incredibly well maintained and provided many fun opportunities. We backpacked in about 3 miles to create our home base. Then during the day ventured up the river, spending hours in the cool water and exploring the rocks. We spotted almost 30 sheep and many lizards! Definitely recommend this spot for a short day hike/swim or a week long excursion.

Probably rated as difficult due to it's entire length. The first mile or so up McCarty Bench is moderate, then the trail is a very gradual incline. Once you get up the bench you are rewarded with stunning views of Grand Mesa and the West Elks.

Rolling trail slightly elevated as it parallels creek. Plenty of places to enjoy creek and falls.

Was a very fun trail to hike, made it about 4 miles in before I decided to turn back around. Water is flowing rapidly and the small waterfalls are tremendous!!

I went in late April and enjoyed the easy grade, cool weather and beautiful scenery. Lots of interesting history along the way, i wished I would have known more about the area before I went. Great trail! Note: no car camping available at the trailhead, I was a bit confused about camping availability and was glad I planned ahead for not camping there.

I haven't done the whole trail, just sections but it's one of my favorites because it is relatively flat and mostly follows water which is always refreshing. The bonus of this trail is that there are numerous potholes along the route to provide swimming opportunities when it gets hot. the further up the trail you go, the more secluded it is. There is lots to see on this great hike. the only drawback is that it's about 1.5 mile flat hike just to get to Canyon but even that is scenic, following the Gunnison River to the footbridge. once you get to the canyon, it's very scenic right away.

Very nice trail, very nice wildflowers...

Incredible trail that reminds me of Moab. It hailed on us on Easter but we took shelter while it passed. I would do this trail again and again.

beautiful scenery

Overall great trail with some waterfalls, a historic ranch, and some petroglyphs. Scenery there is similar to that near Moab. The only problem I had with it is there is some graffiti on the petroglyphs.

We had a great 7 mile RT hike to the amazing petroglyphs. Great canyon country, noisy waterfalls, fascinating geology. and perfect weather. will come back again and go further up the canyon.

Moderate to heavy weekend traffic but great views, petroglyphs and amazing rock formations. Would be a decent hike for those who can go long, or short, then turn around. Views of the mesa can be seen by venturing beyond cactus park.

It’s a good place to get out and go for drives, so many options as far as which directions you go, have been here many times and I’ve never seen it all yet! Great views everywhere at the canyon rims!

We loved this place, could only walk part of it a few days ago due to approaching darkness so went again today to walk the entire trail. Many places to stop and relax to break up the trek. Terrain is easily negotiated.

Awesome hieroglyphics.

We parked at the Big Dominguez campground, and hiked the 15 miles down to Bridgeport over 3 days. We had our kids, ages 8 and 12 with us. It's a really easy hike, impossible to get lost. The only trick is finding water up toward the top - the creek is in a deep canyon. We ended up scrambling down the cliffs to fill our water. The kids loved playing in the water toward the bottom, though. Definitely a family friendly hike.

We were just driving through the area to check out the campground. We ended up walking this trail for about 2 miles. It is gorgeous, full of red sand and trees. Very easy first 2 miles. I will definitely be back to play in the waterfalls!

Had a great time exploring this trail for the weekend! We hiked in from the bottom to the top and back and camped at a couple different spots in between. Trail ranges from loose gravel, to hard packed dirt, to sand so be ready for anything and watch your step! The middle sections are harder to follow but lots of cairns to guide you! I almost took a couple tumbles on the loose gravel but other than that all was well! Great way to spend earth day!!

We are preparing for a hike that involves some immediate elevation gain. This was the perfect choice for us. Immediate gain at beginning, so be ready. Hiking poles were nice to have, especially since this is an out and back trail. The downhill is prone to slipping due to loose dirt and small rocks. We only hiked 3 miles in for 6 round trip, but plan to return for a little more soon.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Love Utah, but also love this place! Huge and beautiful canyons. It’s surprising to find landscapes such as this in CO. Such an amazing hike. Beautiful canyon that echos the sounds of time. It can seem crowded, but hike past the newspaper rock and you won’t see many people. When you get to the main rock art look right to see some petroglyphs that are not vandalized. There harder to find but more beautiful because inconsiderate vandals can’t get there. The canyon is more spectacular then the rock art. It’s huge and inspirational. There is no doubt why folks chose to etch their spirits into the rock. Great place, and great energy. Definitely do this hike. You’ll be happy You did ;).

Only struggle is the heat midday, but that's what the waterfalls are for! You can hike down to the second waterfall, too. Make sure and try it.

Hiked out to the first petroglyphs. Which was about 3.5mi. it's a super easy hike, trail is obvious, not much elevation gain. Good views of the river, and canyon. Overall fun, enjoyable hike.

We hiked in the 100F weather but swam in 2 waterfall and its totally worth it! The main waterfall is a bit difficult to find but you'll see a rock that's cut in half and then start hiking to the left towards the black canyons

Waterfall was flowing with the recent rain. You have to jump the creek and down climb a cliff to get a clear view.

It was a beautiful hike! Didn't find the waterfall. If your looking for it you need to go the Delta way not through Gateway!! My dogs loved it!
