Unfortunately Columbine Open Space is sandwiched between a railroad track to the east and a highway and another railroad track to the west. As a result it is a noisy hike with no illusion of being away from civilization. However, the hike is enjoyable and easy.

The north loop is mostly grassland. Apparently this is rattlesnake territory. The south loop has more trees and wetlands. I saw a wild turkey and some deer on this part of the trail.

A short drive south of Castle Rock. A decent hike but other nearby trails are preferable.

Did this hike mid day. There is no shade so bring a hat and plenty of water. Several benches along the way to stop. Even though the hike is relatively easy I would not bring my kids because of the lack of shade and the fact that it is an open space with mostly grass all around would probably bore them. (They're kids after all)

Pleasantly surprised.

Nice and easy. The directions are not quite right. Go further south and you will see the marker for hikers and the sign for the open space.

Beautiful area south of Castle Rock. Lots of wild life in this area. Snowy this time of year (Feb 2012) A good snow hike/snowshoe hike. Rolling hills, trees and well marked trails.
