Good views and a fun trail to hike with your pup. Parking is difficult.

Hiked the mesa trail and the shannahan loop yesterday - really enjoyed the views of the scenery ! Be aware to wear proper shoes when the snow melts - both trails get extremely muddy and slippery.

A wonderful spot! The mountains and trees were coated with snow, and it was just so beautiful! It was a warm, sunny day, perfect for a hike. Lots of friendly people and dogs along the way. Definitely check this place out!

There were a few sections on the Mesa trail that had snow/ice, some sections were very muddy. Beautiful views of the Flatirons.

I hiked this loop going counter clockwise and would rank it more easy/moderate than full on moderate. Good bit of mud / ice still on the trail this morning. You probably don’t NEED micro spikes / Yak Tracks, but I threw mine on for about 2 miles and wasn’t mad about it. Definitely start early if you want to avoid crowds.

super crowded but great trail! great views even though it's right near town and 93!

Great hike, pretty easy, a lot of sun exposure

A very beautiful trail through a pine forest. Several parts have a steep incline with several sets of steps to hike up, and because of this I would rate it as Moderate rather than Easy.

The views from May's Point are amazing! Nice, easy trail.

Great views with several historic homesteads.

Nice easy trail on top of Flagstaff that leads you back to the parking lot at the top of Flagstaff Summit Rd. Could be considered a loop if you just walk back along the road to where you started.
Sometimes Flagstaff Summit Rd is closed so you will have to park further down and walk up the road to the trailhead. That is harder than Boy Scout Trail itself.

The trail itself is nice, healthy mix of terrain and very few steep ascents. However the trail junctions need some attention, definitely check your map. We ended up heading to Shadow Canyon by mistake and eventually pushed on to Bear Peak, where we found even fewer trail markers, it was a mess and not something we were prepared for. All in all... there was quite a bit of user error here.

Good quick trail if you're staying in or passing through Boulder!

Love this trail! Went on a Sunday early afternoon and only saw a handful of people, compared to other trails on the front side.
Shades most of the way up and very beautiful hike all the way to the peaks!

I created this hike because I wanted challenging 6 mile route near Boulder. Most of the hikes in this area are really short and steep- this one is a great mix of terrain and has you going up and down the whole time. The trail turnings can be challenging- just check the map at each junction, they are well marked.

Difficult trail for one rated easy. Steep climbs for long periods. But beautiful scenery and pretty shaded so not too hot.

I'd consider this trail a "difficult" easy due to the sharp incline at parts. Quieter one of the Chautauqua trails. I took Baseline trail over to the mini parking lot where Saddle begins. When you reach the peak elevation you get a lush pine woods growing in what almost looks like vertical wall due to being in a valley of sorts. Great place to take a break and snack once reached the peak.

No doubt about it, Chautauqua Park is a busy place on the weekends. Don't be surprised to find a full parking lot. Parking on weekends is not free, either download the Park Mobile app before you go or be prepared to take the Park to Park shuttle (plenty of signage along Baseline Road telling you were those pickups are located so kudos Boulder).

So now that your in a busy mountain park, where do you go? I recommend the Amphitheater/Saddlerock loop. It's a steeper climb than most of the park which keeps a lot of the traffic at a minimum. Despite being there an a gorgeous Sunday morning I probably saw fewer than ten hikers on this trail, even with the Chautauqua lots being full!

Most of the hike is shaded in a pine forest and the trail (like all the trails in Chautauqua) is well maintained. The incline can be intense, but does not require any unique technical proficiency and I don't recall any part that I would consider at all dangerous. This is a great trail for new hikers looking to challenge themselves or prepare for more challenging hikes.

Nice trail. 4yr old and 3yr old needed to ride in packs about 1/2 the time.

The current detour makes the beginning of the hike tedious and crowded. Stick with it and you will end up in a beautiful area pretty much by yourself

Great short scenic trail I enjoyed it!

Super foggy day = no view at the top. The remnants of fire damage from the western approach is apparent. Trail was easy to follow, but be sure to take the correct descent from the top.

There were loads of wild flowers. Beautiful!

Hiked with two girlfriends and two small dogs. The trail was moderately trafficked. Lots of smiling faces and dogs. We would definitely do this hike again.

on Mesa Trail

5 miles, moderate, poor trail conditions when wet. Beautiful views of Devil's Thumb area and Shanahan Ridge in S Boulder. From South Mesa Trailhead in Eldorado Canyon, I went up Mesa Trail, took a right onto Upper Big Bluestem, through the gate, then up to the left, staying on UPPER Big Bluestem, on up to Mesa Trail, then left down back to the trailhead and parking. Parking fee for non-Boulder County vehicles.

One of my favorite hikes in boulder!! I love how this trail has less hikers than some of the others at Chautauqua. Gorgeous views, some shade and places to stop and get water when needed. I love hiking this with my pup!

Great trail for a day's hike! We parked in the lot off Eldorado Springs Dr and planned on hiking to Chautaqua, but Mesa Trail is closed at the Shanahan fork. If we were feeling ambitious we could have hiked Fern Canyon to Shadow Canyon and then back to our car, but we decided we had enough hike for the day and hiked down Shanahan Ridge to get catch and UBER ride back to our car.

Nice trail. You have to pay to park to use the trail.

I think it's good for the beginners. It was a beautiful trail when I went there in the end of April.
