Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness on the northwest flank of the Uncompahgre Plateau is characterized by the high, east-west trending Black Ridge dissected by seven major red rock canyon systems, draining into the Colorado River. Canyons vary in length from several miles to twelve miles in length and may contain interesting side canyons. Geological features in these canyons include spires, windows, giant alcoves and desert patina. Canyons may reach a depth of almost 1,000 feet, forming spectacular redrock cliffs. Spring runoff and summer thunderstorms create glistening waterfalls and plunge pools. The area contains the second largest concentration of natural arches in the world. Vegetation in the meandering canyon bottoms include pinyon-juniper, grasses, and cottonwoods, willow and box elder. The upland mesas contain a dense stands of pinyon-juniper with some sagebrush parks. Cryptobiotic soils are well developed in the upland area. Wildlife viewing may include deer, mountain lion, desert bighorn sheep, along with golden and bald eagles.

I hiked back towards the arches on a Friday night and camped well outside of the no camping zone which encompasses Rattlesnake Canyon. Saturday morning I struck camp and headed for the Arches. Rattlesnake Canyon is incredible! The arches and rock formations are magnificent and the view and vistas across the massive gorge are breathtaking. This hike is well worth taking. The hike in from Pollock Bench trailhead is reminiscent of hiking in the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park. The canyon and arches are on par with parts of Arches NP, but without sitting in the massive line of traffic and fighting through hikes with hundreds and thousands of others. Can't recommend this one enough. There was still snow and ice in the shadows and shaded sides of the bluffs and canyons. Nothing difficult to traverse, and as the sun came out and the temperature rose the melt began to muddy sections of the tack closer to Rattlesnake Canyon than Pollock. The trail is fairly easy to follow, the only tricky parts for me were the scrambles down, up, down, and up the canyons the trail crosses. Just make sure to take a look behind you as you come down the tail so you know what to be looking for on your way back out. This could easily be a great day hike, but having a night to enjoy the canyons was well worth it. Enjoy and be safe!

Great trail hiking, and running. Nice views, quiet and peaceful. Good for horsebacking, a few rocky areas with slick flat rock.

Pretty nice hike. Good break from the snow. Parking lot to parking lot, though, Strava called it 7.25 miles not 6.5.

Got off the trail easily. Correct loop back was not marked. Pretty overall, easy in most spots. I would do again now that I know where I’m going.

Hard trail but magnificent. Some bouldering and rock face in areas. 16.4 miles and 9 full hour (with about 1-1/2 hours for lunch and photo ops). No water so take enough to last you and getting a very early start is strongly suggested. Saw two others hikers only. Go prepared.

Went for a Sat-Sun backpacking trip and the trail was absolutely beautiful. Definitely some scrambles so would only recommend for experienced backpackers, but would be a GREAT day hike trail. Beautiful views and the trail was relatively easy to follow, just keep eyes out for trail markers. Enjoy!

This trail is fantastic for kids (I took my 4 year old) and dogs! It’s not as scenic as others in the area, but is great for getting the kiddos and dogs outside and off the concrete. Loved it!

Be kind to your doggies, pack food and water for them because the trails are technical with more climbing than expected. Overall, amazing time.

Beautiful, moderate hike. Perfect for pup, and didn’t see a soul on a Saturday morning.

Had a blast till I started running out of water. The trail is really poorly marked in places but just take your time and you’ll be able to navigate no problem. The arches are very VERY cool, I’d never seen one in person before and it made the hike worth it 100%
