Oh lordy. Went straight up the steep part to begin. Definitely use poles. Good tread helps too. I have never had to stop so much on an incline. It was also 3:30pm and 90F so there's that... It's brutal and it keeps going and going. When you finally make it to the top, the descent on the asphalt is a great welcome at first. But soon I was jamming downhill with jelly legs and it was so easy and boring I found myself just closing my eyes in motion wishing I could be back to my car already. And I'm never usually like that on hikes. It's a training hike. It's not fun or pleasant. But it served its purpose. Also- lots of litter. Boo. Remind people to pack up their Kleenex and bottles if you see them tossing stuff.

The main loop is a great hike up, nice views, and you can double back the same way but the sand can make it difficult if you don't have the right shoes. Otherwise, you can continue down the fire trail which is paved for an easy walk back down. What I do find annoying is that there are a lot of litterbugs here. If you can't carry it out, don't carry it in! Wish they would just set up a trashcan at the bottom of the trail and another at the top so people can at least throw away their cups/bottles/food wrappers.

The dashed trail on the map is SUPER SUPER steep... probably 80% grade on two or three climbs, and some areas gravel or dirt with no footing--wish I would have brought my hiking poles because that was a bit scary! I definitely recommend going the steep part up to the top, and then the fire road down. No shade at all on this trail.

Love this hike!!!! There are several paths you can take and some are steeper than others do it helps to modify the hike to make it harder.

This is a very fun, social hike. If you go clockwise on the loop, you'll be faced with a really steep climb up a firebreak. A lot of people do it, and everybody is very friendly and supportive, if, as is likely, you will need a cheerleader at some point. Just be sure to bring water and grippy hiking shoes. If you are adventurous, there are other steep firebreaks in the area. The views of the Valley from the top are very nice, and the gentle paved road back down will help you catch your breath from the steep ascent.

Another hot one!!
