Explore the most popular trails in Stunt Ranch Santa Monica Mountains Reserve with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

Set in the southernmost mountains of the Transverse Ranges, the Stunt Ranch Santa Monica Mountains Reserve is located in the Cold Creek watershed of Malibu Creek, perhaps the most pristine and biologically diverse watershed in the Santa Monica Mountains. Cold Creek itself flows year-round through the reserve. Smaller tributaries of Cold Creek additionally provide the reserve with a well-developed corridor of riparian habitat. Primary habitats include chaparral, coast live oak woodland, and annual grasslands. Overall, there are more than 300 vascular plant species, including the state-endangered Pentachaeta lyonii, a rare member of the sunflower family. The reserve also harbors an abundance of fauna, particularly birds, and two rare reptile species: the San Diego horned lizard and the San Diego Mountain kingsnake. All of Stunt Ranch burned in 1993, but has recovered well. The site

Almost no shade! I don't recommend the trail if it's sunny and you have a dog; mine did not have a great time. A nice trail for humans and a good workout!

Beautiful day with scenic views and amazing clouds. Definitely recommend for a cool breezy day. No shade, but there is a log book at the top.

beautiful and lush!!!! all the green!!

Nice steady uphill, not too strenuous. Recommend early morning to get some shade on the wide switchbacks, well maintained. The trailhead is on the opposite side of the road from the parking area.

on Calabasas Peak Trail

Came at 8:30am on a Sunday, lot at red rock canyon had one other car in it. When I left around 11 nearly all the spaces were filled. Glad I came early! Trail was great, temperatures never broke 60. Would not recommend this trail on a warm day, there’s no shade. Peaks were in the clouds.

Loved this trail. I brought my 16 pound 7 year old Cockapoo and he did really well the whole way! Very quiet and pretty. Not many people here considering it’s Memorial Day weekend. Caution: lots of rocks before getting to Cold Creek Valley Preserve and some thorns and sharp thistles on some of the walk in the Valley. I can’t wait to do this again!

great trail that runs by a creek and leads to a bird and plant preserve.

Super dog friendly, came midday on a Thursday and only saw 2 other hikers the entire time. Make sure to get to the very top and bag that peak!

Not a bad, quick day hike. Easy for experienced hikers and moderate for those not conditioned. Very exposed to the sun, so prepare appropriately. Views good, but there are better in the area. No fire damage.

Consistent, moderate incline to peak. Went at sunset after two days of rain-was clear and beautiful. Great 360 views at peak plus a lockbox with a notebook where you can jot something down. Out and back is just about 4 miles. You’ll crack a sweat, but not too strenuous.

Keep an eye out for a geocache at the summit!

This was my first hiking trip in a decade (since I was a Girl Scout) and it was beautiful. Very light and easy, brought my pup with me and he had a blast. Although I mistook the Calabasas Peak Trail for the Cold Creek Preserve a whole mile in, I made my way back down and found the correct trail. The sun didn’t come out till about 10, it was cool and misty and very friendly people on the trail. I would recommend for both dogs and kids, we even saw a harmless snake trek across the trail. Can’t wait to go back again!

The hike to the ridge was moderate. The views from the ridge are quite spectacular. I would do this again. It is good for a easy going climb and spectacular sunset and view of sandstone formations

Steady incline the entire trail until you get to the top.

Beautiful hike that starts with a gentle descent. Heavy rainfall earlier in the week left plenty of water in creek and everything green. Trails are well-maintained and there is shade for most of trail. Had to cross two small streams. Fun and will do again!

I hiked this with my dog at sunrise and it was beautiful. Very quiet and scenic. The incline really isn't bad at all, especially if you are a regular hiker. The trail is well marked, but keep an eye out for the small trail that forks to the left to make it to the peak at the midway point. There are a few other trails that branch off of it, so there is plenty to explore if you want to tack on miles. Trail starts across the road from the small parking area.

Goos uphill trail to the summit then down through cold creek trail and back up! Did about 10 Miles combined.

The trail begins in a lush California forest filled with oak trees and a beautiful dry creek along the path. Finding the various mountain streams that lead to the creek was a fun diversion. As the trail continues through open spaces filled with various native brush, you realize that you are at the bottom of a canyon surrounded by green mountains.

The trail is a good workout going up to the peak. We hung out on the rock outcropping just before reaching the official peak. Great place to enjoy the views and have a snack. The trail is all downhill back to the trailhead, so pretty easy going back.

I've never been there

Did it with my dog. Strenuous but great views. No shade so go on cooler day.

Beautiful vistas for much of the hike. I would rate this trail as on the strenuous end of moderate. There are some very steep sections and the last bit is very steep. Take your time, drink some water and just enjoy the scenery.
