Mostly sun baking. There’s a little shade in the ravine. Make sure you have plenty of water especially when it’s 97 degrees. Next time I’ll try in August when the permit people to go to falcon city.

I agree with others about this being a moderate intensity hike, but I'd like to add that it took me 1hr 45min instead of the predicted 2.5hrs (I'm no marathon hiker, btw). If you want to get the uphill over with, go clockwise and hit up the Ridge Top Trail first. This portion of the hike runs parallel to the neighborhoods and contains many constant inclines, and rare shade . The Briones to Mt. Diablo portion is fairly wide and exposed. There weren't many folks this morning (started at 8:30am) given that it's summer time, and a week day. Shell Ridge Open Space is beautiful in the spring when the flora is green (instead of brown), reminiscent of the luscious rolling hills in the sound of music ;p

I thought Sugar Loaf Shell Ridge was steep. Not too bad. Good loop!

Difficult trail to follow; lots of intersecting trails. Recommend going early during summer to avoid the heat. Will return in spring when everything is green

Def no shade on this hike but beautiful views. Went off the recommended trail to get more of a incline, which was def worth it. Will do again

It’s moderate, not easy. A lot to enjoy, naturewise. Avoid doing this on a hot day.

A pretty, low to moderately trafficked trail that overlooks the hillside. It’s easy to wander off course if you don’t keep up with the trail path.

Nice hike! Go early if it’s going to be a warm day, there’s little shade on the trail!

I started at 1 pm on a relatively cool day. Following the Briones to Mt. Diablo Trail, Wall Point Road, Stage Road, and back to the Briones to Mt. Diablo Trail. Most trails are exposed except the Stage Road which is partially shaded. Most climbs are gentle. I did it in less than 4 hours. Overall it was a good hike.

Great afternoon walk with friends and family. There were bikers and hikers alike. Some of the trail was partly shaded which gave a nice break from the sun. Dog friendly and there was a family with a stroller who didn’t seem to have any difficulty. The trails were well packed giving a sturdy support underfoot (hence the stroller seemed easily managed by the family I saw). The neighborhood drive up to the trail was lovely as well.

Great trail. Many wide roads to walk down-perfect for dogs! East hills, beautiful vistas, but be careful! This trail gets warm quickly! Lots of long grasses, birds galore, saw some wild turkeys. I will be back to explore more.

Lone oak trail does not exist. Not much shade on the trail, so definitely bring water on a hot day.
