This trail is not moderate. I'd rank it as easy. It's not marked, but just take Nelson Rd. to the very end... thru the area of cabins. The trail is a little over 5miles. Many beautiful moments, however there has been some recent lumbering.. lots of cut trees and logs along the first mile or so. The river is pretty full and beautiful as are the giant sequoias. I would definitely go again.

Hiked this trail by myself in April and it was a great time. It’s short but worth it. The hike is mostly uphill until you reach the summit, with beautiful views along the way. Once you reach the summit there’s a great spot for lunch and many have shared their memories and thoughts of this hike on a notebook that is in a tin container on top of the summit. All in all great hike can’t wait to do it again :)

Awesome trail!

Is there a sign at Lightner Peak ? I think I passed it today ????? Great trail

Loved this trail! We ended up going further then the map showed, missing the first left turn that completed the loop. Actually glad we did that though, as there is a second turn that loops further around the mountain where you gain an extra 300-500 ft in elevation, and it spits you back out into the main road. From there you get a great view of Lake Isabella! Still about 6" of snow on the back side of the mountain in the end of March.

Beautiful snowy day, and my dog loved it

Brisk spring morning hike. Cross the creek by crawling over logs. Woulda gone further but my daughter got tired. Definitely will come back to. Bring water. No shade, which is fine in cooler temps but would be killer in the summer.

late February, cool morning and the river was low, but still a great little 4 mile hike.

After hearing we got some snow, decided to give the trail a try in hopes of having some snow along the trail. Pleasantly surprised to see the entire landscape blanketed. 3-6 inches along the trial. A bit strenuous with the snow otherwise the trail would be fairly straightforward.

This is a beautiful hike, along the middle fork of the Tule River that takes you through majestic Sequoia Redwood groves and is beautifully, scenic from beginning to end. If you’re looking for a beautiful, mountain experience that’s not terribly crowded, this may be the one for you.

One of my favorite hikes: scenery, wild flowers (May), workout - highly recommend! 12 miles

As of 1/28/18, some snow on the ground but not enough to lose visibility of the trail. It is possible to drive up to the trail but no designated parking. We saw a total of 4 people during our 2-3hr time spent on the trail. We were not able to complete the trail for several reasons, mainly due to a very icy thin bridge. Looking to go back in warmer months

It was raining the entire time, heavy fog, I went with my father and older brother very early in the morning and we had the trail all to ourselves. We were completely alone. We saw wild deer, bear tracks, birds. Sure we got all cold, wet, footwear muddy, etc. but that only added to the adventure. What a great GREAT time we had. Like everything else in life, it is what you make it.

I am looking to repeatedly return again.

This trail was a little difficult to find after the sign that says “Freeman Creek Trailhead”. We made a right turn into the lot right past the sign and then you’ll keep going straight onto the road with the marked sign (can’t remember the number) NOT the road to the right. It’ll just take you back to main road.

We hiked about 4.5 miles into the trail and didn’t find any end point so we turned around at this point. It’s a fun trail the first half and going back is a BIG workout. Expect to go up all those fun little descents. Took us about 4 1/2-5 hours total with little stops. Beautiful scenery but definitely a moderate hike. Including taking a little detour in the beginning we did about 10.5 miles. Not sure where this trail was supposed to end.

Hiked on 1/6/18 and did some geochaching along the trails. I would say that this is great for older kids, as there is some spotted elevation climbing going up. Great views along the trail of Lake Isabella. Our views at the top were obstructed as a neat fog/light shower storm rolled in! Will go again in the spring!

Love this trail! Just the right amount of incline and beautiful views throughout the whole way!

Came here for a day hike with my dogs. There is a small dirt parking lot with two picnic benches across from the trailhead. Interpretive trail guides are available at the trailhead. Very pretty hike that climbs steeply at first, and takes you through stands of pines, cedars, and firs. The view from the top is worth the trek, especially near sunset. There is a park bench at the top. I would rate this hike moderate due to the elevation gain.

Easy pretty :)

One of the most beautiful hikes I've ever done! I would rate it at a medium hike level though. The hike is long, but not hard. Amazing trees, fern, views

This trail is a bit misleading based off the map. I thought the end would be some epic spot but the map on Alltrails simply stops when in actuality the trail goes up to Ponderosa. We stopped roughly where trail shows though.

I would also argue that this is a moderate hike. I am not in good shape and although I got my HR up at spots it is not hard.

Beautiful trail and hike.

Nice trail. Easy hiking, great with kids. Lots of tree cover so not many views but where you can see it is great. Very enjoyable.

My mom and I loved this trail! We've lived nearby for many, many years and never knew it was there because we'd usually only go to the mountain for the snow! It was a great trail - just challenging enough to feel like a hike and very scenic in places. You do have to share the trail with mountain bikers, but they're usually very aware of pedestrians, so just pay attention and share the trail. I still can't believe such beautiful wilderness was right in our backyard this whole time!

Would you recommend this trail at the end of November?

Great hiking trail from Whiskey Flat trail head to a terrific waterfall pool area of the creek. Picture perfect.

I just hiked this trail today. It was a tough hike for me since I didn't prepare so it was an uphill battle for me. I took my time and made it. The view was beautiful.

Good hike but be forewarned the staircase is closed! And you can't get around it easily at all (would take some advanced rock climbing). Still a beautiful hike though. Only 2.5 miles from the trailhead
