Nice out and back trail. We went as far as the spring, not much water right now, just a trickle. About 4 miles out and back to the springs, but you can go much further if you want. Lots of up and down, as others have said. Saw no one else on an early Tuesday morning. Nice chance to escape the desert heat and take the dogs out (dog friendly!)

Dogs ok! Fun little trail, lots of up and down. Definitely more uphill on the way back to the care so be careful! Lots of cacti and cool desert plants to see

First to Review

The trail getting to the turn-off was great. However, there is no actual trail to reach sheep mountain. So, if you plan on doing this hike please, hike with a partner. I did this hike solo, thinking it would be a manageable trail but found myself having to navigate a dried out river bed, maintain a direct path Northbound, and had to traverse areas that are difficult to maneuver. I’m an experienced hiker but this one definitely puts you to the test. You end up hiking about 2 miles off the trail and over about 2 smaller peaks. Also, be extremely careful and on the look out for rattlesnakes. I had a run in with one that’s as resting under a Boulder right below Sheep Mountain. Safe travels and bring plenty of water.

Start at the west end of the cove for less sandy wash hiking and more dirt trail. Once you drop down to the bottom on the salton sea side you do about 2 miles of sandy wash walking all the way to lake Cahuilla. Overall amazing views, and really cool cactus gardens

Started at Cove did quite a bit of wash walking once we hit the large Boo Hoff sign we started the climb. Beautiful gorges with Ocotillo blooming and prickly pear. Once we got to the 3.7 point we could see the Salton Sea the view is gorgeous view of the entire valley... didn't do the whole loop turned back after the 3.7 mark..

Favourite one of mine. Usually start from Cove, then take right side of mountain to minimize early wash walking. Then join Boo Hoff part way up. Challenging hike up from there but well worth it to the top at the Saddle. Return down. I’m 73, takes me 1.5 hours to top from parking lot. Excellent this morning in cool weather.

Hiked the La Quinta Cove Trail & then went on to hike a portion of the Boo Hoff Trail. Recommend the Boo Hoff Trail because it has more "character" & adds more challenge than the LQ Cove Trail. Very little shade...be sure to take plenty of water!

Nice views once you actually start gaining some elevation. First 1.5 miles is totally boring walking in the wash. Probably wouldn’t do again because of the 3 miles of wash walking. 3.5 miles to nice look out over the Salton Sea. We did 3.5 in and back for 7 total. Talked to a lady that said the loop was pretty boring as well.

There is an area towards the middle that has benches and a lot of shade. Great place to relax and eat a snack. Trash cans are available.

Hiked this 1/12. Did the full loop counterclockwise coming back the last stretch on the Cove to Lake trail. It was about 12.5 miles in total. Great grind to the top of the mountain - loved the workout. Long enough and steep enough to make you feel like you accomplished something meaningful. Most people seemed to hike to the top then turned around and went back the same way. We were the only ones who went to the end and connected in to the Cove to Lake trail by the Quarry golf course.

Dogs are NOT ALLOWED (beyond the opening walk-up), and there is a requirement that visitors need to pay to visit the lake. Very frustrating not to have known that before we went!
