Beautiful views the whole time! I would rate this loop as “strenuous”. Bring lots of water and spf. There are also some very rocky downhillls. Ocean views are glorious! Have fun!!

We went in the paved side from the parking lot up to the ruins of the ranch. From there we climbed up the switchies to the top of the hill and were rewarded with that VIEW and an easy, gorgeous walk down. Awesome trail and a butt burner.

Gate was closed today. Bummer!

It was challenging for our pooch but over all the trail was great and spectacular view ... the formation of the rocks were picture perfect and would love to come back more often!!! Next time best to bring extra water esp when the weather is warm... luckily hikers were kind enough to share to us their water... after seeing us had to carry our voluptuous med sized dogs :-) pack some lunches .. great idea to stop for a picnic... there are some tables when u reach halfway. Pay attention where you park... there are 2 parking lots and we could not find our car

Good view. Can get really hot in sunny days

Long, winding, and beautiful drive to one of the two parking lots. Great job place at the top to have a lunch or snack.

Great place to hike! I enjoyed it very much

Great family hike!

Ok- this is a beautiful landscape to hike in, and I am glad I did it...however, a couple things of note: the map at the trail designated this as strenuous, not moderate, and it is 6 miles—
There are LOTS of paths that are like river beds without water, and almost no flat ground to walk on for the last 2 miles downhill of the hike. There are several places where you have to actually climb up and through boulders to continue on.
Sandstone Peak is not an actual path...it is actually an incline of rocks, sandstone, and a few large steps...at the top, it was gorgeous, but not for anyone afraid of heights...or falling...there are no guard rails, paths, etc. Again, I am glad I went, but small kids would have struggles, and it was tough!!

great mountain views. no shade. good hike for staying fit

Thoroughly enjoyed this hike! We arrived around 7:50am, which was perfect for parking. The scenery was incredible and there were a couple of challenging moments but overall pretty easy and chill. To be honest, we were a bit confused at certain forks in the trail, but that’s just because it was our first time. Will definitely return!

Great hiking trails for family and your paw babies.

The was a beautiful hike. I loved being able to enjoy both the mountains and the water, the view was gorgeous the entire hike! Bonus-looking at the ruins of the old mansion that was burned down during fires and a small waterfall. We saw a lovely group of deer up on the mountains which was a pleasant surprise! Will definitely go back again! Moderate Hike with some steady inclines (we did the loop).

Very beautiful and scenic trail in Malibu. Parking is really hard to find in the designated trail parking area. However, you can find “precarious parking” just 2-3 minutes from the trail entrance. If you want to park “precariously”, don’t enter the road that leads to the initial parking. Continue going up on the road you entered from the Pacific Coast Highway. Other than parking, this is a beautiful and relaxing hike. Not intense at all. The Rising Sun trail does have a pretty steep incline, but definitely doable.

Take the alternative loop back instead of simply turning around at the waterfall. It’s a challenge but you WON’T regret it! The views are incredible. Be on the lookout as this is a natural reserve and rattlesnakes (as well as others) reside here.

Went on this hike recently. Had some issues figuring out where the waterfall was located. Got turned around a few times trying to refer to the alltrails map. We could see the falls so we ended up taking a little side trail off of the Backbone trail and made it up to the falls. Absolutely beautiful, with lots of running water and a few tiers to it. We even climbed up the side of it further and there were more trails on top of the falls. Really great hike, would recommend!

Beautiful and relaxing. It’s definitely an easy hike. Great for kids and dog friendly. Saw a couple of quails running on the trail for a while. So close to Malibu Seafood for after hike lunch.

Excellent trail. Once you pass the initial incline, you go through beautiful flats with tons of flowers, oak trees, and shade. Gorgeous views from the peak. Not very busy/noisy. Hidden gem.

awesome hike great views totally worth it.

Awesome hike, definitely bring good hiking shoes if you plan on hiking the whole thing. It's a rocky and dirt trail, great view the whole time and a decent incline with a little bit of elevation.

One of the best hikes in Malibu; moderately difficult, great scenery and views

Beautiful early spring day for a hike, and a beautiful place to take one. Red sandstone monoliths contrasted nicely with green coastal shrubs, some of which were blooming. We saw a couple of dozen other hikers on this trail, and the trail is dog friendly. The views are amazing and reminded me a little of hiking in Arizona with the red sandstone contrasting with the greenery of the plant life and the bright blue dessert skies. The parking lot was flooded from recent rains, and was nearly full to capacity when we arrived-but there was also parking on the street leading into this hike. This area also appears to be popular with rock climbers and rappelers as we saw both.

No Shade ! Blazing hot. Please add filter to app to filter on shade!

Beautiful views. Lots of different trails to take. Few things though, it has absolutely no shade so I recommend going early in the morning or on a cloudy day. Also the creek was absolutely dry. And if you take your dog, beware of ticks. Found a few on my dog, one during the hike and one after during her bath.
