Hiking

As of 9/21, the parking lot next to the trailhead was open and accessible. This is an amazing out and back hike which you can incorporate a lake swim in the middle of it! The pre-existing rock arrow that shows the correct path to take to the falls is no longer there, so seeing the tunnel to go under to get to the off shoot trail is hard. The best way to look for it is to start looking at the ground after 1/2 miles past the lake, and look for rocks in a pile and a sliver of trail under a tunnel of trees to the left. There are a lot of parts that are overgrown, so long pants and shirts may be the way to go. Enjoy the hike!

Easy trail down to the beach. We had a picnic on the beach, who doesn’t love an ocean view? Traveled October 2017

A short hike out to another beautiful ocean overlook. We watched seals sunning themselves on the beach, so I’d recommend bringing binoculars. Traveled October 2017

Beautiful views of the lighthouse & surrounding ocean. We even saw whales out in the distance, so bring your binoculars. Traveled October 2017.

Didn't do the full loop. Started at Muddy Hollow, to the beach and back. The trail was partially shaded but there's definitely spots where it gets really hot. Didn't see anyone else on the trail until we got closer to the beach.

More than 1/2 the loop is a gravel road. Scenery is okay, not too busy, and everyone was wearing masks. We hung out at the beach for a little while, which was nice

Easy 6 mile hike. We walking along the beach which was really nice. The overlook is a little hard to find. We started walking towards the beach and then up from the big tree.

Went there yesterday. Super super crowded. Cars were not allowed 2 miles from the trail. Had to walk 2 miles to the main parking area and then another 0.6 miles to the beach. Long stretch of beach. No shade. Difficult reach to the beach with stuff.

If you’re not an experienced hiker, it’ll be pretty tough for you since the whole trip is 20 miles which took 7 hours for us to complete. Overall, I don’t think it’s worth it to walk all the way there to see the waterfall, it wasn’t that great. For directions: first we parked at the lot Mesa road where there’s a gate saying road closed so we started walking for around 1 hour until we get to the start of the hike trail. It’ll then take another 1.5 hour to walk the whole trail until you see an arrow made of rocks and branches on the ground directing you into a sketchy grass tunnel, another 30 mins to walk thru and then climb down steep cliff rocks to get to a mini waterfall. The big waterfall is way down but there was a giant dead fish and seaweed all around with a lot of flies surrounding them which smelled pretty bad. On the hike back, we ran out of water and it was completely not a great experience for me as someone who doesn’t exercise a lot. I even almost fainted with the hot weather and dehydration but the only way back is to walk since there aren’t any cars allowed inside the gate.

Novice/casual hiker, and we're looking to ramp up our milage. So we took the advice of Lori M. (below) and added some length. Hopefully this will provide tips for fellow non-pro hikers. :) We arrived at about 8am and the TH and it was EMPTY. The trail to the beach is mostly dense marsh/forest land and it's gorgeous. TONS of animal scat and very recent elk activity, probably just early that morning. The trail heads out to the beach and its under 2 miles. We followed the previous comments and headed down the beach a bit and then up through the big trees (it's the 3rd big tree if you turn left and head south on the beach). That takes you back up to the coast trail. I believe you could actually just stay on that trail when you hit the restrooms before the beach. But anyways.......... It was a super hot day and the coastal trail to the Fire/Laguna trails and then taking that Fire trail was a bit rough on an 80+ degree morning. Fire trail is a fairly steep incline up and then down with very little shade. As we got closer to the TH by the hostel, and as it got later in the morning, we passed a lot of folks. If you add this part on to the hike, you will have to go through the parking lot and down the road to get back to the Muddy Hollow TH. If we do this again, we'll do it in reverse and to the Fire trail to the Coastal trail to the beach and then catch the Muddy Hollow trail at the end of the day. The actual Muddy Hollow portion of the trail we did was flat, super easy, very shaded, and would be a great ending to the day. We left at noon and when we got back to the car, the lot was PACKED, and streams of cars were coming in. I HIGHLY suggest doing this trail early to get the best out of it.

Loved this trail- super easy. Beautiful walk on the beach to get to the coast trail (recommend walking the beach instead of coastal trail and pick up the trail again later down the beach) and then sculptured beach was peaceful and next to secret beach which was fun to explore with all the sea arches.
