No shade. But steep hills, good workout. Avoid hike on hot days, but if you do, get a lot of water.

Literally a breathe of fresh air! With all the smoke across NorCal and our stay at home practice, this easy trail is definitely a welcome break. Reservations are required at Muir Woods so plan ahead. Note: The majority of visitors wear masks whenever people past each other so don’t forget to be thoughtful of each other and reciprocate. You may also want to use it to help with the smoke as you get closer to the ridge.

There is no real parking area at the trailhead; we, like many others, parked along the roadside (risking being fined or towed -- signage was unclear). To be cautious, one might do better to park at Muir Beach, which adds 0.2 miles to each end of the hike. It was fairly busy on a weekend day, even though foggy & overcast. Going counterclockwise, we encountered many bikers on the exposed climb up the Dias Trail, with its view back to Muir Beach. My favorite part was the climb down Redwood Creek ... shaded, intimate, and lush. The last mile of the hike was rather uninteresting ... just a pedestrian trail paralleling the Muir Woods Road and then onto Highway 1. Pelican Inn, near the trailhead, is a nice place for a British pub-style lunch after the hike (it opened at 1 pm). During COVID times, food is brought out to people dining in socially-separated groups on the lawn ... picnic-style, bringing their own blankets and/or folding chairs.

More moderate than easy, but a great hike. The 500 ft elevation gain is steep and in one place.

HikingGreat!

I love this trail! There are stairs and lots of incline but that’s the fun of this hike. This is a rugged, rooted trail with leaves & pine sticks you’ll end up walking over which can make it slippery, the shades are makes it easier to hike.

HikingGreat!No shadeRocky

Not smokey!!! The trail was groomed, wide, and not heavily trafficked in morning. Plenty of parking at Muir beach at 9 am. More people showed up on the trail after 12. No shade, wear a hat. Go early to get cool marine layer. I wore shorts and tankini top and never got cold. The climb keeps you warm. Go clockwise so you get the steep incline out of the way and end your walk along the coast. We saw sweet peas and other wild flowers, and Quail near Tennessee Beach. The small pebbly rock beach at Tennessee Beach was interesting. I took my poles but didn’t use them. People were mindful to put their masks on as they approached. People brought their dogs some were on leashes some were not. There were mountain bikers, joggers, and groups of hikers.
