Explore the most popular Nature Trips trails in Mount Diablo State Park with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

The first mile up is more like moderate plus. After that, quite easy. Great views. A great introduction to hiking on Mt Diablo. Lots of poison oak along the lower trail sections.

I would recommend this trail because of amazing valley views. Trail is a bit steep but totally worth it. Make sure to carry 3-4 L of water. They have a well maintained visitor center at the summit that tells the history of the mountain and its formation.

We came at the wrong season when water all dries out.

Map is wrong. Clayton put up no parking signs except for about 10 spots. No more hiker parking on weekends on Regency dr. Start at Mitchell Canyon and support the park while having access to water and bathrooms

Good hike. Wouldn’t do it again in full sun. Would start earlier or later in the afternoon. Took us 2.5 hours to reach the summit going about 2 miles/hr.

Complex and rewarding. Pants and long sleeves recommended, some sections are completely overgrown. Saw some deer, lots of lizards. I went counter-clockwise and coming down was tough, next time will definitely go clockwise.

Great for peak training. Trail is thin and lots of poison oak so technu up!. Start early am and take water if you want to summit. You can park at end of Regency. You have to pay at Mitchell Canyon.

High quality hike if you want to get some elevation gain.

Great summer/fall trail. Bikes can go very fast on parts of the trail. I would avoid in the rainy season.

Beautiful, challenging trail!

Beautiful panoramic views from every lookout point on a clear day. Amazing to see the changes in topography on every side of the mountain. I'd recommend requesting the written directions from the park ranger at the park's entrance. For novice hikers, we weren't lead astray. We saw ground squirrels, deer, tiny lizards, and plenty of birds. Definitely was hot. Thanks to fellow forum members for recommending the 3L of H2O. We headed counterclockwise (northwest) around the mountain and had our climatic summit at the end! The summit includes plenty of picnic benches, clean bathrooms, and water fountains for your enjoyment.

Very pretty and amazing rock formations.

This is more of a hike. We had a group do a trail run here and there were very dangerous areas - extremely rocky and steep drop offs. Single track and rattler in the middle that wouldn’t budge for a while.

Extremely hot. I started at 9am and it was hot off the bat. Not much shade until you return. Intense climb going all the way up and some rock scrambling with a nice peaceful partially shaded fire trail on the way back. Lots of dragonflies and butterflies no big animals. Overall challenging especially with the heat but you feel very accomplished. Make sure to start early and bring LOTS of water. Fountain at the visitor center, the other parking lot at the top, the fountain is broken.

Reviews are right. Hard, great views.

no dogs :(

Weekday hike. Never saw another hiker on the trail going up or down. Good workout but the mountain is really best for cyclists.
