I hiked Kelso Dunes 3 times already. I drove 2.5-3hrs from where I lived. But it's worth of a drive anyway. I took different people here already. and they love it. the 3rd time I went was Saturday, April 28, 2018 with my daughter and son. they are only 5 & 8 and they love the sand dunes. they made it all the way to the top of the sand dunes. i was so proud of them. and this was their first hike of a 3 miles. never did took them on my little hike before. they love it and asked for more hikes. also, this place is just amazing. never a dull of how many times i been here.. for some people who don't hike much.. this will be legs workout for sure.

U wont regret!

Great hike. Well established trail all the way to the top. Good variations in landscape. Wonderful views at the peak.

Beautiful peak with great views of the Kelso dunes and surrounding desert environment from the summit. There is a registry to sign at the peak just below the rock cairn (there are two summits within about 75' of each other, the registry is on the more western peak.

Thanks for Gerald Sauer for allowing public access to this beautiful place!

This place was awesome!! I didn’t hike all the way to the top because I wasn’t prepared for that grueling workout. However, I stills got some beautiful pictures.

Joshua Trees from the get go are amazing and the views from the top are unbelievable.

All the incline is at the end making for a good workout with rewarding views at the finish! Very enjoyable and well marked hike. Great views of the Dome!

It’s a really lovely place. The hike is quite manageable, though take it easy on the way down.

This is an absolutely beautiful hike! The view from the top of the dunes is awesome, and it's incredibly quiet and peaceful. That being said, don't underestimate the sun and sand-this hike is very tiring and it's easy to dehydrate if you don't drink enough water. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife! We found some super cute geckos and saw lots of snake tracks (but no actual snakes) in the sand.

Cool trail that apparently has the highest concentration of Joshua trees in the world. Nice views at the top. Took us 45 minutes to go up and 30 to descend so it’s a great quick hike!

Climbing the highest dune was the ultimate "stair stepper" experience. For every step forward, one slips backwards six inches. Extremely rigorous workout with spectacular views along the way.

Great hike through Joshua Trees, Juniper Trees and cactus habitat. A well maintained trail leads up the peak and at the top are great views. The hike up is not overly strenuous and overall it is an easy trail with little shade.

First do I️t in the morning and not in the summer. Soft sand the whole way and no shade. Awesome views if you can make it to the top. Suggest doing the last elevation barefoot.

The trail basically ends at the start of the dunes. From there, you have the option to climb up the dunes or not. Trail leading to the dunes is well established. Epic tan acheived.

Hiked around 6:30am and the weather was perfect!! Totally recommend hiking before sunrise. Also, they have restrooms in the parking area which is great too

Difficult, but worth it! Great views from the top and fun running down. With lots of water, sunscreen and a hat you should be all right. Don't underestimate the sun and sand making every step hard.

Hiked May 1
Very Hot and No Shade
Strenuous due to soft sand.
Hike up the side for easier rout to the peak.

Drive and Parking is a breeze for all cars.

Really nice trail! First part is flat, among the joshuas and lots of variety in desert plants and flowers. Then the climb to the top was rocky, and fun! Beautiful vistas at the top!

If you go on this trail, know that it is soft sand the whole way from beginning to end! It is especially difficult to climb up the elevations. There is NO shade, and it is very strenuous. Bring lots and lots of water. It is beautiful to see these sand dunes....maybe I will make it another time when it is cooler.

Awesome hike! Breathtaking views, and it is so quiet up there. Very spiritual.

Fun, relatively easy trail. Some really cool volcanic intrusions can be spotted. Very nice views from the top. The old mine tailings and associated ruins were cool to check out.

Moderate trail with lots of wildlife. Went early in the am before the sun got hot and encountered a coyote, jack rabbit and a small herd of cattle. Some areas are soft and sandy, some firm and rocky.

The forty acres on top of Silver Peak are private property. I'm the owner. You’re welcome to visit at your own risk so long as you respect the remote wilderness setting and "leave no trace." That includes no camping, fires or firearms. The steep hike to Silver Peak is quite strenuous and potentially dangerous in hot or cold weather. The extent of the property is shown on the National Geographic map of the Mojave National Preserve.

We marked the start of this trail once we got out of Banshee Canyon and walked in the opposite direction of the rings. We didn't do the entire trail because the sun was setting, but we thoroughly enjoyed the part that we were able to do. The part we did do was very well-marked with ground stakes.

it is easy walking ... watch out for the horse poop. We encountered only two other people on the trail, but we did see a jackrabbit and as we returned to the parking lot, we saw free-range horses that were kind enough to submit to our taking their pictures.

Definitely a trail worth doing.

This hike takes you through what is the densest Joshua Tree forest in the world. It's a great ... and easy ... walk and very lightly traveled. There is only a slight incline going out until you get to the end where you can do some rock scrambling up a ridge and see some astonishing vistas.

I second what others have said about these dunes being more impressive than the Mesquite Flat Dunes. Highly recommend visiting at sunset, if you can. The sunset hues and dune shadows will make the landscape (and your pics) that much more dramatic.

These dunes are more impressive than the Mesquite Flat Dunes in Death Valley. The climb to the top was brutal -- I recommend walking up the side of the tallest dune and following the ridge to the top rather than trying to walk straight up. The views at the top made the struggle worth it though, and it was really fun to run and slide down the dunes.
