Great trail very quite and serene.

very nice trail, beautiful and peaceful. highly recommended place to spend time with family, hike or simply clear your mind from the crowd of the city without being far away from it.

Absolutely gorgeous hike. I was concerned the fire road would be a bummer, but it never took away from the incredible views and stunning variation in landscape. So much green! I live in the desert and do 99% of my hiking in the desert, so if this review seems a tad hyperbolic, that’s why. Minus one star for being forced to walk along Las Virgenes.

It a good starter hike. Mostly fire roads and little shade.

If you start inside Malibu Creek SP, it’ll be an easy 2.5 miles in til you reach the start of Bulldog. That’s when the fun begins.. over 4 miles of incline to the peak. Don’t do this run/hike when it’s hot because you will hardly get any shade. View is great, you get to explore the caves (if it’s open to the public).

Be very careful on the descent. If you stick to the wide trails, you will end up on a parking lot off Las Virgenes, which will be 2 miles away from where you started. You’ll be hiking on a very busy road where the sidewalk disappears sometimes.

Definitely not for beginners. If you want the view and the challenge of Bulldog, or if you just want the elevation gain, I suggest you go out and back. Don’t do the full loop unless you pack a lot of water. It’s going to be a long day for you.

Love the creek and openness of trail, where there early enough to enjoy the trail in peace and quietness. Also parked outside the parking lot and save $$$

Inclines are not too difficult but trails are long! Beautiful views to your east and west as you ascend.

Easy

One day trailed running and hiked! Completed the Backbone Trail: Tapia to Kanan-Dume, in 4 1/2hrs, over 11.6 miles in/out, a total of 23.2 miles, at 2,936ft. Rated: Moderate/Hard. Nice overcast (February 2018). Good to build your endurance!

The trail is primary used for hiking, mountain biking, and trail running and it is accessible year-around. In addition, be mindful of mountain bikers and dogs need to be on a leash. It was an amazing workout! My legs were on fire: burning nonstop. Also, if you’re planning on parking on Malibu Creek Road, the cost for parking all day is $8.00.

On that note, if you're looking to get into shape, lose weight, or tone up. I recommend, incorporated some kind of physical activities. That was a lovely hiked and trailed running. "Mind over matter." ❤️

For my second hike it was easy enough for both me and my husky(on leash). We got to see the lake and made the full circle back to the entrance. That last hill to the main street gets you heart going right at the end. There was a good amount of people for the time we went (nice people) and some people on bikes. Be mindful of the horse droppings as they are all over the trials.

Great hike. A bit of a climb so make sure you are ready for the elevation change and the length. Also beware of the trail skips on the southern part of the loop before you get to the Mesa overlook trail shown on the current map. It’s doable you just have to forge your own path, find a different trail or use the road.

Beautiful and easy trails. But we were disappointed that we couldn’t get to Malibu Lake at the end.. you can’t even see the lake and you can’t access it. Bummer!
Along the whole trail there are many spots where you can smell the sewer. So much for a walk in nature with good smells..
the MASH site is pretty cool. Worth the effort.
We still enjoyed it after all and will do it again.

Ran this trail yesterday and it was absolutely beautiful. I'll be making it a regular!

Well traveled, nice amount of shade. Groomed trail. Mostly flat with a couple steep climbs but nothing technical or difficult.

Takes you to the top of mountains over looking the road down below

Parking is 12 dollars. Some people park on Mulholland Dr and walk in to avoid the fee.

This trail scales closer to easy. There's no dramatic inclines or excessive rough terrain. Family friendly!

Pretty straight forward with on and off shading. Century Lake was my favorite point of interest. The 50 ft dam can be accessed with some easy trespassing, but there's no safe way to get to the base of the dam.

The set of M*A*S*H is half way through the hike.

Unfortunately the ending is rather lackluster as you are dropped off on the tip of Malibu Lake which is gated off completely. No point to the end other than to reach it.

Cool hike. Starts off pretty easy, and then gets a little more fun. We took our 5 and 7 year olds, and they enjoyed it, too. I love MASH, so that was fun for me and the rest of the family.

200 ft from our car we saw a family of deer. Within 15 minutes we reached the top of a hill with a 360 degree view the grassy plain & mountains. We hiked a little bit further to the rock pool, which was refreshing even in the heat of summer. We spent a little too much time at the rock pool, so we didnt get to explore many of the other trails. If I end up in this area again, this will for sure be a stop.

Awesome hike! It was extremely easy, and mostly flat. It was very scenic and parking is free on the Mulholland Highway. It was also very shady after dropping to Crags Road.

A good walk. The first few miles through a wooded valley as the sun came up were very beautiful. Then a long steady climb to the trail along the ridge. The views from the top were wonderful, but it is all along fire roads until near the bottom of the descent. The way back on GPX route from the Backbone trail trailhead was not a path. I walked along Las Virgenes for a short way before heading back into the park.

Awesome views of the ocean once you climb to Casto Peak. The GPX was very confusing at the junction of the Backbone trail parking lot just next to the water treatment facility. Had to hike on the busy road and re-enter the park to find the trail. Lost the trail again (in the dark with headlamps) at the bottom near the campgrounds and had to finish the hike on Malibu SP roads...still agreat day
