Beautiful views of reservoir. Steep and challenging in part but, great hike.

I went with a friend today. It was a beautiful hike. We walked through the herd of cows (no joke) and saw hawks, flowers coming out of know where and the views where breathtaking! Go and enjoy ...

I went out there today with my dog and was told they will not let you hike with a dog even on a leash. I had to leave and find another trail.

Simply Amazing...will for sure be back!

Definitely watch out for rattle snakes. 20 minutes into our hike I almost stepped on a baby one. Also the juvenile bulls were a little intimidating. Nice peaceful hike. No shade so go in spring or winter.

mountain biking

Drove all the way up here to find that mountain bikes are only a allowed on a small area from the north access point to the reservoir. One star for misinformation.
I did drive up to the walnut staging area from the north and rode the trails, but would only give this 2 stars for mountain biking. Go somewhere else.

Great hill by the dam. best done as a fall or winter hike.... It gets plenty hot in the summer. Near where Los Vaqueros trail intersects 10 years ago there were several nested pairs of Golden Eagles. Not sure if they're still around but it was awesome watching them fly around when I fished that corner of the lake.

Good trail.... Usually just you and the coyotes. I used to fish for trout at Los Vaqueros a lot and take a hike after i caught a quick limit. One of many trails i did here.

nice valley and lake views.

The first part of the trail is all uphill so stay to the right when the trail forks, otherwise you can go down by the reservoir and hike back along the beach to the parking lot (like we did).

It was a Beautiful Sunday morning hike.. Windy but beautiful... right off the incline was a butt kicker

This is a very beautiful trail that is well marked and easy to follow. I hiked it in the spring, so there are many uneven areas along the black hills trail section due to cattle tracks. The views are amazing and well worth the 1000ft ascent. Bring water, a hat, and lots of sunscreen as the trail is completely exposed to the sun as it passes through grasslands. There are lots of cows here, but they are docile and avoid you as you approach. However, they may follow you for a short while after you pass. No problems!
There is a park use fee for the area of $6, cash or credit card.

Beautiful trail and fairly easy walk :)

4/22/2017 Hike
We started hiking as a family and this is only our second hike. I was afraid that this might be too difficult for novice hikers like us. It turned out easier than I thought, the uphill trek was slow going but doable. I don't recommend to people with bad knees or backs. Once you get over the hill, the views are amazing! There are some areas closed off due to erosion and at this time of the year, some parts are overgrown, but still doable. Definitely worth going to this one.

Amazing views!

The lower trail was muddy and overgrown due to the recent rains, small areas just completely torn-up. The wind was almost unbearable to me for the first hour, but I kept going. Great uphill workout though, and a nice view of both Sierra (in far distance) and Diablo. Park entrance is $6.00.

Quite a hidden gem with some great views if you go while the hills are green. The trail starts and ends with substantial elevation changes. This not a casual stroll. Parts of the trail were overgrown with vegetation. There are lots of cows, horses, hawks and I saw a few coyotes on the trail. Also some good views of Mt. Diablo.

Liked this one because I've fished everywhere along the water it goes. There's always some waterfowl on the lake plus the Golden Eagles and a few other raptors. Awesome to watch the eagles swoop down and capture the trout. There is also a very healthy population of coyotes in the area. It's not uncommon to see them when you are away from the people.

I hiked the area a lot with a few different people but never saw another person here in the winter or fall. Definitely the time to do it. I was hardly ever here in the summer.

I use to fish and hike out here quite a bit a couple of years after they opened it. The trails are uneventful but a pretty good hiking and fishing place in the fall and winter months.

Dry uneventful hike, If you go farther in the system on the back of Vaqueros there are some nested Golden Eagles and you eventually can go through a gate to Round Valley. Be on the lookout for Rattlesnakes especially in the rocky areas.

It's a bit of a hike from your car to the reservoir but once there the trails are easy to find as there is only one way to go (the other side is blocked off by a fence). The Crest Trail goes to the top. Not much shade so go early in the summer or when it's cooler in the spring or fall. There's also an interesting building by the parking lot that explains the history of the area. Lots of birds including Turkey Vultures.

The trails are hard to find. And there are no good sights. All you can see is mountains. Never again.

One of my favorite trails

Monday, November 16, 2015

We did the crest trail, it's about two miles. Great views, We saw about eight deer out for a run just before 4pm. The fall is a great time to go if you don't want to get roasted, not much cover on some of the trails. Fishing has been great here too from what I hear and have seen in photos at the center. You can hit The Shed off Vasco if you're coming from Livermore or Walnut road from Brentwood CA-4.
