Closed due to COVID. We got kicked out by the very angry sheriff. Can’t even hop a fence these days. But we were respectful and he let us go without a fine.

I parked at the County Line Staging Area after paying my $6 entrance fee. There are several areas closed in the watershed due to nesting eagles which is pretty cool. There are no dogs allowed which is a bummer because mine goes everywhere with me. The Black Hills Trail starts at the back of the staging area and immediately starts gaining elevation towards the ridge. Word of caution: there are free range cows, therefore, there are free range cow patties. It doesn’t bother me, but then I’m a farm gal. The herd is young and we’re skittish so try not to spook them to much. They steered (no pun intended) clear of me. There is no shade whatsoever on this loop. Fall, Winter, and Spring are ideal times to hike the loop. It was 56 degrees when I started and 64 when I finished. The trails are well marked fire roads or mowed trail (turnoff for the Valley View Trail). During rainy season these trails will become quite muddy because there is no slope (other than down the trail) for run off. Once turning onto Valley View Trail you gain another ridge. The views of the Tri-Valley were pretty awesome. Valley View Trail is also a fire road, mainly dirt and some sandstone. Super fun for trail running or hiking. Would be a little rough for younger children to complete the loop due to elevation gain, but otherwise it’s nothing technical. My Strava said it was 4.4 miles and 919 feet of elevation.

good trail to practice on. well marked, clear paths. didn't see anyone else out there and the cow cows ran off when they saw me. $6 for parking, enjoyed the trail

Great wide flat trail. Can bike and run. Great views. $6 parking fee tho sheeesh

Chased by 200 cows ... do not go please. Else go with Gun.

Black hill Trail was closed, there were a lot of cows and were aggressive. no shade and was wet.

Visited Dec 2018. Please note dogs are not allowed. This is due to increased bobcat activity. (I don’t see how to alert AllTrails to update their intel).Great vistas of wind farm. Hiked with my infant daughter, good difficulty level for me to hike with kiddo in carrier.

I went out there today with my dog and was told they will not let you hike with a dog even on a leash. I had to leave and find another trail.

Good trail.... Usually just you and the coyotes. I used to fish for trout at Los Vaqueros a lot and take a hike after i caught a quick limit. One of many trails i did here.

nice valley and lake views.

This is a very beautiful trail that is well marked and easy to follow. I hiked it in the spring, so there are many uneven areas along the black hills trail section due to cattle tracks. The views are amazing and well worth the 1000ft ascent. Bring water, a hat, and lots of sunscreen as the trail is completely exposed to the sun as it passes through grasslands. There are lots of cows here, but they are docile and avoid you as you approach. However, they may follow you for a short while after you pass. No problems! There is a park use fee for the area of $6, cash or credit card.

I hiked the area a lot with a few different people but never saw another person here in the winter or fall. Definitely the time to do it. I was hardly ever here in the summer.

Dry uneventful hike, If you go farther in the system on the back of Vaqueros there are some nested Golden Eagles and you eventually can go through a gate to Round Valley. Be on the lookout for Rattlesnakes especially in the rocky areas.

It's a bit of a hike from your car to the reservoir but once there the trails are easy to find as there is only one way to go (the other side is blocked off by a fence). The Crest Trail goes to the top. Not much shade so go early in the summer or when it's cooler in the spring or fall. There's also an interesting building by the parking lot that explains the history of the area. Lots of birds including Turkey Vultures.

The trails are hard to find. And there are no good sights. All you can see is mountains. Never again.

One of my favorite trails

We did the crest trail, it's about two miles. Great views, We saw about eight deer out for a run just before 4pm. The fall is a great time to go if you don't want to get roasted, not much cover on some of the trails. Fishing has been great here too from what I hear and have seen in photos at the center. You can hit The Shed off Vasco if you're coming from Livermore or Walnut road from Brentwood CA-4.

Directions took me to someone's private drive...
