Lassen Peak, the largest plug dome volcano in the world, is joined by all three other types of volcanoes in this park: shield, cinder dome, and composite. Other than the volcano, which last erupted in 1915, the park has hydrothermal areas, including fumaroles, boiling pools, and steaming ground, heated by molten rock under the peak.

Great views as you climb after leaving the forest. Wonderful 360 degree views on the top. Great hike.

Hiked this on Tuesday morning, not a soul on the trail so it was quiet and pleasant. Took me 1 hr 45 min round trip. The lake is dried up this time of the year, which is disappointing, but the view is nice. There are a lot of shade on this trail which is great for summer time hiking, but it was freezing early morning in Fall weather

Did all three volcanic features in one hike.

Beautiful view of Crumbaugh Lake along the trail up to Bumpass Hell. The trail is a gradual incline from Cold Boiling lake and a decent work out. The geothermal area at Bumpass is unique and worth the hike!

Hiked this trail today in the way back from Bumpass Hell. The view if Crumbaugh Lake is much better from higher view point via the other trail than the actual trail to the lake... but I was already out here so might as well drop by.

Wow! Absolutely amazing hike. I got a little anxious on the switchbacks near the glacial area... very steep and I’m not a big fan of edges :) It is strenuous at times but hubby and I hiked it with 3 kids (2 teens and a 6yr old who is a rockstar!!!) The teens were quick, but I took many breaks with the little one. She never said she couldn’t manage, but took rests when needed. 2 hours up, and not much less down simply because by then she was tired. Teens took 1.5hrs up and less than that down. We’re all tired but happy

Nice hike , mostly forested. The lake this time of year is tiny, like a pond.

Great views and the trail is great. Also good job of information on the volcanic features, wildlife and plants.

Such a nice trail with beautiful views. Getting up to the geological survey requires a little more tactic because of the snow, but just go slow and you'll be fine. Most of the trail was dry with stable footing, but as you get close to the top there is a little bit of snow. There are butterflies everywhere! I went at about 330 pm and just had my t. shirt- it was so warm. At the top I needed gloves because my hands were freezing. Walked up fairly fast and enjoyed running down. The incline was easy and consistent enough I could hike up and run down at a stable pace. :) It took me a little less than two hours to summit then run down.

Beautiful, moderate hike through meadows, forest & the prize at the end: beautiful volcanic activity. Well maintained, somewhat steep here & there. Trailhead is at Drakesbad.

Easy stroll with great views of Mt Lassen and Chaos Crags. Not sure I would go out of my way to come here, but definitely worth it if you're staying in the Manzanita Lake campground.

Short trail. Easy until you hit the base of the cinder cone, then it's a bit more strenuous climbing the cone itself. Imagine walking up a giant pile of tiny pebbles. Luckily it's a short climb. In addition to the crater, the top has nice 360 views of the surrounding peaks and lava beds. Overall, this was the most interesting and unique trail I did in Lassen. This trailhead is very out of the way compared to other hikes in Lassen, but I think it's totally worth the detour if you have the time! The unpaved road to Butte Lake was easily traversable in my Toyota Corolla, just go slow.

Beautiful! The walk up the steps on the way back was steep but spectacular scenery and views.

Nice consistent clip to the top. 360 degree views from the top with a gorgeous view of Mount Shasta. A bit cold and windy at the top so bring layers. I was fortunate enough to see the monarch migration while on the trail....thousands of butterflies! It was truly spectacular.

The falls are mediocre, the real gem of this trail is when you skip the return trip on the trail you came in on, and instead take the trail that is marked as “steep steps”; you’ll see why.

Moderate hike, nice forests and some small lakes make for a great Fall outing.

Short and easy hike. Good place to see evidence of volcanic activity, although nowhere as picturesque as Yellowstone.

Hiked in early October. Short hike with a gentle incline. Great views from the top of the surrounding landscape and Mt Shasta! The trail ends at a false peak, I certainly recommend scrambling the extra hundred feet to the actual peak. When I hiked it there were occasional snow patches on the trail, although easy to navigate.

Perfect little walk in the woods around a serene peaceful lake. Watch people fishing. Fun little leg stretch after filling up at nearby gas station.

Beautiful update of the trail. I agree with previous recent comments about the trail

Difficult, steep climb but well worth it. Spectacular views. One of my favorite hikes ever!

Accessible trail starting right behind the visitor center. About half of the hike is shaded. Beautiful view and waterfall at the end. The length marked on the sign says 1.5 miles, but it’s actually 1.8 miles.

little windy, a little cold. very fun!

Have lots of incentives for the kids along the way. Take a big break at the base of cinder cone before heading up.

Trail is open again! This was my first time waking out there and it was an easy hike. I’m out of shape so it got my heart rate going when coming back to the car because that is when the steep uphill part is, but it was fun and interesting. The wind was blowing so it didn’t smell and we went at the end of September, so the weather was in the 50’s, 60’s while we were there. I wore hiking boots but I saw people from kids to old people walking in regular tennis shoes and jeans.
