The trail is gorgeous. We went for 2 nights. First night we slept by the Gem lake. second night by the Thousand Island Lake. All together the trail is a little more than 20 mi. its November, so at night the temperature dropped very low, to around 10F. However, during the day hiking was warm enough. There is no developed campgrounds, so you can camp almost anywhere. there is plenty of water, so there is no need to carry lots of water with you. Waugh lake is not really a lake because of the dam, its dried. Our dog was super happy with the hike, too. We picked up permit, maps and bear canister at Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center.

The drive is beautiful and there’s some great climbing rocks along the way I only did the first half after the climbing rocks in the road very nice and easy for a car to drive on.

Beautiful view!

Soo beautiful view for such a small and easy hike!

The views and the town were absolutely worth it! The old mine is blocked off so you can only go in about 10 feet. There was water flushing from the mine when we went. The elevation definitely got to us once we were up there! Take short breaks and go slow, the elevation is no joke. The loop itself did not seem to be worth it. I would have just done the out and back trail if I knew we were going to be walking along the road in the end. 4 stars because walking along the road was no fun, but Bennettville is 100% worth it!

Steep hike all the way up to the lake, great views along the way but the lake was very small and hardly any water left in it this time of year. So, if you're doing this hike, do it for the views rather than the lake. I was the only hiker all the way up and back.

Great short hike to a beautiful lake!

I am a seasoned hiker for sure, having hiked much longer and harder trails than this one, down into the Grand Canyon, up to Wheeler Peak, as well as Grinnell Glacier and other tough hikes, so this hike wasn't very hard on me as far as switchbacks were concerned. But what got me was that the trail wasn't in good of shape as I would have liked it to be, up towards the 3/4 mile point. The trail is very narrow there and right by a very steep drop off. If you weren't careful and made a wrong move or slipped on the loose sandy terrain, you could potentially fall to your death right there. Way too narrow for my taste. Not for people afraid of heights.

Beautiful short hike, the lake is stunning with its emerald color and I had the hike and lake all to myself when I went on 30 October 2018. I definitely recommend doing this hike if you're in the Mammoth Lakes area. One of the most beautiful lakes I have seen.

Well maintained trail with excellent views on the lakes. I walked this in late October, out and back in 3.5 hours. Not accustomed to the altitude, so it was more tiring than I expected. Well worth the effort though.

Fantastic!

This is a rough hike up from Reds Meadow. Most of it hikes through burn area that has little to no shade, so bring water and take your time.

We planned to hike up to Crystal Lake but saw a sign up to the crest so we had to do it. It was well worth it. You can see many lakes in the area from the top. When you get toward the top you will see a trail to the left and onward to the top. A couple told us to keep going up to the crest and it loops at the top. You can see the back of half dome at the top. Beautiful hike!

Did this May 15th, 2018. Be in shape for this hike because it is all up hill. That said it is very worth the climb because you get to see so much more then you expected. The old tracks they used to haul up equipment are still in use it looks like. Then the two lakes you come across are just beautiful.

The hike up to the lake was very tough, at least for me, maybe I’m out of shape lol. As soon as we got to the lake we caught fish. The Brook Trouts were kind of small, but I’m sure there are some larger fish. Between the four of us, we caught thirteen fish within an hour. This lake is absolutely beautiful I’m so glad we decided to do this.

Awesome hike to a beautiful lake. A must do hike- we continued up to the crest overlooking so many lakes.

I found the trail more difficult than I expected, but that may be because the trail is at nearly 11,000 ft. The trail is very well maintained and the views spectacular. Seeing the oldest living things on Earth , the Bristlecone pines, are awe inspiring. The trail is really about 4.3 miles but I forgot to start recording at the beginning of the trail.

Doing the Mammoth Pass Trail without diverting to McLoed Lake would be a big mistake. It requires very little additional effort and the lake is beautiful. The view of the valley is usually fantastic but today it was hidden in smoke from the fire in Yosemite. I hike this trail every year and it never disappoints. Seeing the forest come back from the 1992 fire is amazing. I only hike one way, from Horseshoe Lake to Reds Meadow, and take the shuttle back to Mammoth. I like to hike in early morning and then have breakfast at the little cafe in Reds Meadow before getting on the shuttle which has a stop directly outside of the cafe. This year I had the added treat of having my wife join me on the hike.

Great hike with panoramic views and fall colors.

Not as wonderful as I hoped. The “trail” is the maintenance dirt road that tracks the electric poles. The difficult rating must be because of the length and elevation changes, but walking a dirt road is not very difficult. I do not mind open sky, but there is no tree cover.
Tip: park on Lower Rock Creek Road just off 395. The trail start is further north on 395 beyond where the App says it is, but you can “bushwhack” up to it due to low shrubs.

After reading about this hike, we were excited to visit this lake. The trail going up has a good view of Silver Lake, however, it also has a view of the road and cars on the way up. The trail itself has a lot of rocks, and a lot of scrub brush. There are very few trees therefore very little shade. Once we got to the lake, we were suprised to see a concrete dam and a power station. Not exactly the serene alpine views we were looking forward to. The lake was not pretty and the trees on one side were cut down for some reason. All in all, a pretty disappointing hike. With so many hikes in the Mammoth area, I can't recommend this hike at all.
