Great variety of terrain and views. Exciting mud in some places- bring appropriate shoes in wet season. May have to detour around cows+calves on the trail.

Very good trail to hike with kids. Both 4yr and 12yr were super impressed with the path. Good mix of creek view from the trail, valley view from the hills and view on beautiful small pond full of turtles!

Not bad of a hike... the only thing it’s dry and your exposed most of the time to the sun. I think it’s a great fall winter early spring hike. I think it can be too hot in the summer tho!

I got a little lost on this trail and went in the forest after my steep incline up the mountain. I felt like I was a character in a horror movie that got lost in the woods, but thank goodness for the Trail App I lived another day. Pretty moderate hike going uphill but overall it was pretty fun. I saw hikers along the way harvesting the black berries there.

- Well maintained path
- Somewhat challenging
- Mostly open landscape
- Good overlook of East Bay
- Mild foot traffic
- Multiple additional paths in area to make hike shorter or longer
- Decent signage
- Picnic / sitting area / bathrooms near NW edge of Park

The trail is quiet and not many people are using it. It is also very dry (Dry Creek). The pay off is the view at the top. Beautiful view of the Tri City area and beyond. Not a great dog trail in the summer due to an abundance of fox tails.

Only got halfway through the hike both times I've done this, when the trail thins out there has been rattlesnakes in the path. Great view and pretty easy to do. I don't recommend doing this in hotter weather due to the snake problem, and lack of shade.

Awesome trail

Good day high with nice view of the bay. Half of the trail was shaded and the other half very exposed.

Awesome views! Fairly intense once you get on to tolman trail, but eases up once you hit south trail. Lots of cows, a pond, and a creek side walk on the other side of the loop. We started at 7:30am and finished around 9:30, with a couple breaks. Glad we started early as when we got back to the parking lot it was almost full(it was Sunday). We picked up some empty water bottles and other misc garbage. I’d recommend it. Our record says it was 5 miles.

Hiked 5/5/18. The hills are still green, grasses are tall and thick. Mustard on sections of the trail were up to about 8_9 feet tall. I'm sure this will all change in the next week or two. I was surprised to find a small grove of trees that included redwoods and Sequoias. Some owner at some point must have planted these. I was thinking I didn't see much wildlife then saw a bobcat near the top of Tolman. Beautiful bay laurel tree at the very top. Veins were great of the bay.

I mountain bike this route once or twice per week except after recent rain. It is not recommended for beginning MTB riders. But if you are up to it, the view, wildlife, and workout going up; and the adrenaline, speed, and view going down are well worth it.

Beautiful views of the Bay and grazing cows. Best to go early to avoid the heat...even during the Spring.

Great hike, especially in the winter when it's not too hot as there isn't a lot of shade. Green hills and cows grazing on the hillside. Muddy due to the recent rains.

As mentioned, great workout hike. Easy to find TH and not a ton of parking. Trail was in good condition and lots of green rolling hills. At first the elevation isnt too bad however by mile 2 you will be sweating. I took the Gossip Rock Spur. I didnt see many people at the top however once you come down trail gets super busy

Nice enjoyable trail! STEEP in the beginning of the trail, but it’s worth it once you see the stunning views... there’s even a bench on the top for you to rest.

Great workout! There are extended periods walking up hill... not the steepest grades, but you will feel the burn. Descent can be tough on the knees, so wear good footwear!

Trails were great and views were amazing.
But BEWARE: While I was running out there this morning, my Jeep was broken into. They smashed my back window and stole my workout bag. Luckily I had nothing valuable in it.

Beautiful hike. Definitely do when it's still green but it's beautiful all year round.

Pretty cool trail! Partial shade/sun and dog friendly! Some hills but nothing too bad.

Well this was a pleasant surprise. I've done a handful of hikes in the Garin and Dry Creek parks and found them to be rather meh. Typically in this area you're walking up a steep hill with no shade or through a cow pasture. And yes, once you reach the top of the ridge, the views are nice, but you can get that all over the Bay Area without having to constantly dodge horse or cow poop. I would prefer to go on hikes where I don't have to negotiate a herd of cattle.

But this trail was different and by far my favorite so far in the area. The loop was mostly shaded, which was much appreciated on a warm sunny day. And the tree line that you hike through is scenic. There was still some evidence of horse traffic, but I didn't encounter any cows. I went in the evening on a weekday and by the time I got onto Meyers Ranch trail to head back to the parking lot, the hills were keeping me in the shade there too.

The Pioneer trail was really nice. I had passed it before on my way up High Ridge, but this was my first time on it. No bikes allowed on that trail btw as it is very narrow.

I'll probably go back at some point. It's good for a short hike during the week when you get off work as it isn't overly strenuous and you can knock it out in less than an hour. And I like the May Rd. staging area - you don't have to pay to park and you don't have to climb up a big hill to get to it (like you do at Garin).

A challenging trail that offers some shaded areas along the way. Wonderful views at the top!
