I attempted to make it up to Tyler lake today but got stopped about a half mile from Gertrude lake. Deep snow banks, and flooded out trail. Trail became impossible to find. I will try again in a few weeks. Great trail until that point.

Gorgeous hike! A bit busy today. We started at about 1pm. Stone and rocky path pretty much the entire way up, rigorous at times but worth it! Make sure you have on good hiking shoes. Beautiful views on way up to Eagle lake including, Emerald Bay, Eagle waterfall and all the gorgeous cliffs and pines. Favorite hike so far at Lake Tahoe!!

This area is beautiful, desolation wilderness and all of it offers including the boat ride and some of the trails — it’s very scenic. Extremely rocky and lakes . the landscape, making for an outdoor adventure unlike many others. There can be a lot of people, so be prepared. Great swimming opportunities and maybe some fishing

Amazing trail! Our group did an overnight stay in Lake Tamarack and Lake Aloha. The trail to Tamarack was rocky with slight incline, but scenic and rewarding .After passing Lake Tamarack thats when the snow begins. As of 5/28/20 the rest of the trail towards Aloha is packed with melting snow so highly recommend taking the Lake of the Woods route because of easier and drier trail. Lake Aloha is still very much frozen but its still just as gorgeous and captivating. Will definitely head back at the end of summer to swim the lake!!

Friday May 29, 2020. Arrived just after 9 am was able to park in main parking lot, and it was only half full. Great hiking weather, still slightly cool for the uphill walk which is moderate. Has been a warm week, and the snow melt has Eagle Creek at pretty high flow. Beautiful all the way up, and Eagle Lake is quite spectacular. Most of the seasonal side creeks are dry now. A few side creeks had a trickle of water, so there was some mud. No snow anywhere along the trail. A lot more people on the trail on the way back down, and the main and highway parking lots were full at just after 11 am. So, highly recommend the hike with the caveat that you get there early to avoid the crowds.

Beautiful area, but still a good amount of snow towards Velma and Dicks lake. Without the app it may be hard to stay on path with the snow on the ground. I ended up turning around right after Velma lake and camping by a smaller lake. Desolation wilderness is a beautiful area, but if you are looking for a clear path, now isn’t the time. Also if you do the whole loop, you have to walk along highway 89 for about a mile which is somewhat sketchy.

Beautiful trail! Extremely rocky for the last 3 miles towards Aloha Lake and the trail is a stream from the snow melt. Last mile has 2-3 feet of snow currently.

This is a beautiful, but tough trail. Well worth it for the views, the workout and the spots to take a cool dip in crystal clear water. There’s still quite a bit of snow on the upper regions and lakes side areas and it obscures the trail quite a bit. The map component of this app was helpful in alleviating any stress that I’d lost the trail.

Fun trail. Lots of spring water coming down the trail. Lots of snow at the top and couldn’t find the trail down to the lake. So we made our own. All in all it is a great hike with nice views.

Beautiful trail with lots of scenic views. The trail has quite a bit of snow run off, so be prepared to get your shoes wet. We made it to the Lake of the woods split before turning back due to snow- we kept falling through and the trail was tricky to follow. We headed back & camped at Lake Tamarack which was pretty much snow free. Would do again!

This is a beautiful trail. We went out on Saturday (May 23rd) and hiked from the parking lot to Ralston Peak as an out and back. I love this trail however, right now the majority of the trail is running water and once you get past that, it’s all snow. The last 2.5 miles from the trail up to Ralston was complete snow coverage but pretty easy to follow the foot prints to the summit. The running water can get tiresome. By the time I got back to the parking lot both boots and socks were soaked. Echo Lakes are gorgeous right now and Tamarack is still frozen over. If you push on, Lake in the Woods is also still frozen and the views are unreal right now. Definitely recommend doing it just be aware you’ll be dealing with the snow and run off the majority of the trail.

Camped here about a week ago, beautiful hike to the lake. not very many places to set up camp so get here early. we got rained on in the morning and the whole hike back to the car but that's part of the fun! lowest elevation lake in desolation so barely any snow at the time I went. this was my 2nd time camping here, first time I went off trail and camped on the opposite side of the lake from the trail. would recommend for early season/spring backpacking.

The trail is snow free until the intersection to head down to Lake of the Woods. After that it is basically 100% woods. You don’t need snowshoes, but they can help. My feet stayed dry the whole time in ankle high waterproof boots. Lake Aloha and Lake of the Woods are both completely frozen still. If you’re planning to camp at Aloha, you get your choice of snow or a big flat rock.
