Five of the eight Channel Islands are protected, and half of the park's area is underwater. They are home to over 2,000 species of land plants and animals, and 145 are unique to the islands. The islands were originally settled by the Chumash people, and there is a unique Mediterranean ecosystem.

Torrey Pines Loop is a steep but short trail that offers panoramic views of Becher Bay.

A relatively flat trail from the pier to the Water Canyon Campground. You're likely to see Channel foxes in the campground throughout the day, but each campsite has a secure food storage locker, a picnic table, and a windbreak.

Hiked this trail on Friday, July 12, 2019. First off, the boat ride to the Channel Islands was wonderful. We saw a whale and several dolphins which was a great way to start off the morning. Once we get off the boat at Scorpion Bay we had a brief required orientation and then we took off. We did the loop clockwise as suggested which had some gradual inclines, but nothing too difficult or too long. The first half of the loop is just above the canyon with no view of the ocean. Once at the top the views are amazing. We were able to enjoy our food at the overlook while no one was there. As soon as I sat down to eat my PBJ an island fox came right up beside me. He stuck around for quite a while just checking things out. The rest of the loop was along the ocean bluffs with wonderful views. The hike was about five miles and took about two hours. Definitely recommend this hike!

I hiked from prisoners harbor to scorpion Anchorage in one day from noon to about 7:30 pm carrying a pack of 30#. I am 42 yr old man that weighs 205 lbs. this was very difficult because of the climbing uphills. the weather was helpful because it was foggy and not to hot. parts of the trail were moist due to the mist. I packed 6.25 litters of water and used about 4. It is treacherous. There is no water you must bring your own and take care of it. Also my legs were done by the time I got to climb the peak. Exposed. Long way down on either side of the trail at the mountain. Also some cactus near the trail were I was scrambling at one point and I was unstable due to tired legs. Thank God for his help. Be very careful near the peak. I recorded 12.3 miles however, that was started after I was already hiking so it is more. I would guess a couple more miles. The boat ride with island Packers was very nice comfortable with bathrooms and bar with smacks. The captain stopped for humpback whale, dolphins, and sea lion sightings. boat ride to prisoners stopped at scorpion first so took longer than the boat ride back which was about an hour I believe. Great trail. Beautiful water and steep, colorful cliffs.

We started at Prisoners and camped at Del Norte backcountry campsite. There are only four sites there are the view was spectacular. The next day, we continued on to Scorpion via Montoñon. We appreciated the thick marine layer as the trail has no shade. The trail crosses from one geological plate to the other and it was fascinating to see the change in terrain and fauna. Remember to carry plenty of water!

No shade during the hike but there is a very cool ocean breeze for most of it. The halfway point has shade, 4 picnic tables, a bathroom, and a fox. The hike took us about 2 hours to get to the beach and then we ate lunch and about 1.5 hours home.

This is a great trial to a small beach cove. Really gives the feeling you got out of town if not the country!!! Lots of exposure so be prepared with water, sun blocking aids, and layers.

A nice easy hike with fantastic views. Stay off the service road and on the trail. This 5.8 mile out and back will not disappoint you with steep cliffs and incredible ocean cove vistas.

Fun trail. Hike from the oil well to the campground to avoid a seriously rough uphill climb. Very overgrown so be ready for tick checks

Very fun with views worth the climb! I went up Scorpion Canyon and down Smugglers Road. I think you’ll have steeper terrain on Scorpion than you will on Smugglers. Scorpion also is super overgrown with long grass which is fun, but makes it difficult at times to see the path. Recommend long socks as well. AllTrails should also fix the red mapping - it misses the true trail and could be misleading. Follow the black trail and not the red markings in AllTrails. Enjoy sweeping views. Clouds cleared up over Santa Barbara and Anacapa islands around 12 so my views from the top were great. I’m a pretty experienced hiker and finished the hike in 3hr 30min, plenty of time to make my boat back to shore.

Not a hard hike. Didn’t get the views as it was fogged out. Still a beautiful hike.

Great trail! Awesome views. I would suggest doing it clockwise. Less of an climb up and the first part isn't as scenic so we got it out of the way!

Hiked on 3/1/2010. The trail was muddy in places, and it was that sticky kind of mud that accumulates on your shoes, so it was a little difficult. Overall though, gorgeous hike that I’d love to do again! Worth it to go all the way to the beach.

Marvelous breeze

Damn cool place. The ride over watching the dolphin pods surrounding the boat was the highlight.

Great Hike up to Montanon Peak. There is a small, but clear trail from the Montanon trail up to the peak. The actual peak is the one just beyond the radio tower. I am not sure what trail this route shows going down, but I took the Scorpion Canyon trail which made for a good loop. I suspect that this route is the same, but the GPS was off showing the trail through an unmarked area.

Probably the best hike on this side of the island (Scorpion anchorage) with great cliffside views overlooking the ocean. There are other great hikes, but if you can only do one, this is it. It is not too difficult of a hike, but there were overgrown weeds and grass in spots on the trail, but most of it was clear.

Nice hike that is completely on a dirt road. Great views of Anacapa Island and the coast. I continued on to Yellowbanks to extend the hike which also provided some good views.

Did this trek over 3 days and 2 nights. Started at Prisoners and hiked to Del Norte Camp, stayed the night. Then the following morning hiked to Scorpion and stayed another night. I brought about 5 liters of water in the springtime and was enough for me until I reached Scorpions where there was potable water. Make sure to book your campsites (NPS.gov) and boat ride (Islands Packers) ahead of time.
