On Carmel Bay, the mile-long beach features a bird sanctuary in a lagoon (just before the Carmel River empties into the sea) featuring a wide variety of waterfowl and song birds. Monastery Beach, also known as San Jose Creek Beach, is part of the park and is popular with scuba divers. Ocean and swimming and wading are extremely dangerous.

You need a permit to enter at this trailhead and it was completely locked up. Furthermore, they have several signs saying that dogs are not allowed in this section. There were signs for another entry point that doesn’t require a permit. 4860 Carmel Valley Rd, Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA 93923 So, we headed there. Here there is a section of trails that allow you to have a dog on leash. We really enjoyed walking by the cows and we continued all the way to Quail Lodge, where we had a delicious salad and sand dabs at Edgar’s before walking back. We even saw a small bobcat on our way back. I just give this trail a 3 because it it poorly marked and labeled on this app. Once you get onto the right trails, I would give this 4 stars!

Great trail

This loop is not open, even more, it does not even exist yet. Looks like they have a future plan to finish this trail, but currently there is no loop trail open up on the hill. It is a great hike and beautiful views on the ridge, but then you must turn around and head down the same way. Someone needs to correct the map as it shows trails that do not exist yet. REMEMBER: PERMIT REQUIRED.

You can walk the whole thing in less than an hour. If the surf isn't high it's nice to hang out in the small beaches. It's more a day at the beach than a hike.
