Tons of banana slugs some up hill & climbing over & under trees. 3 miles total. Was a nice hike with our 5 year olds, 2 year old needed a good amount of carrying.

The steep hike up at the start of Año Nuevo trail was the perfect way to begin 2018! I didn't download the hike and just used the paper copy at the Ranger station. I got off track a bit around the Ben Ries campground, but walking on the road the last bit of the way wasn't bad. Super serene, sweet hike.

Very beautiful but pay close attention to the map, you may find yourself walking a little extra that can easily surpass an "easy" level

My girlfriend and I are avid hikers and came to butano just yesterday. We started up año nuevo, to gazos trail, and came back down on olmos rd. While incredibly beautiful, taking the trail this direction was absolutely NOT "easy" and we wanted to let people know who might be bringing children or anyone unfit for such a hike. Intense and immediate altitude gains from the beginning and a constant increase in elevation, even through most of gazos. Most definitely a fantastic and beautiful hike, but definitely don't the difficulty for granted when going in this direction.

Great easy hike for the family with plenty of cover from the sun. Clean well kept trail. Kids saw tons of banana slugs!

The map shows the trail head at the ranger kiosk. Temporary parking only. Proceed farther down to the first picnic area. Take the trail out the back of the picnic area and turn right. Then climb up a beautiful, but steep switch back. There's a view of the Pacific Ocean at the top of the ridge. The rest is a shaded fire road in the Redwoods.

Enjoyed the hike and quick climb in altitude.

Fairly easy trail. Some steep areas. If you are in shape then should be no difficulties. 5 year old did it with me. Dogs are NOT allowed on any "trail" in the park. They can only be on paved roads, campsites, and fire roads. Unless they are a service dog.

Hiked this trail in late April. Many wildflowers at the higher elevations, including huckleberries and beds of forget-me-nots. Redwoods and shallow stream were great fun for kids. Only giving 4 stars due to the thickets on the way up, which are hard on the kids.

Jan 17 trip - muddy and slippery with rain in the last 24hrs, although great park and can't wait to come back with better conditions! Moderate when dry. Hard when wet.

More trails to choose from in State Park!

on Mill Ox Trail

LOVED this trail. Very steep in the beginning but it's over quickly and the rest is just gorgeous. Lots of redwoods, lots of ferns, lots of banana slugs!! Once you come out of the short jaunt on the mill ox TRAIL it spits you out onto the Butano fire road which you follow all the way up to sweeping views of the redwood forest and on a clear day you can see the ocean. It's quite spectacular. Follow the Jackson Flats Trail back down through the redwoods. It's very cool and serene, lots of moss and tiny babbling creeks. LOVED this hike and the woman at the front kiosk was very helpful and friendly. Parking was 10$ and well worth it. Wear some layers if it's an overcast day because the redwoods make for a chilly damp environment.

Nice short trail, one of the smallest in Butano SP, but what it lacks in size in make up for in the Beauty of the area around it, good trail for kids and beginners as you have to take the Olmo fire road to reach this trail, witch is a flat road most of the way in
