This trail is terrible. Completely overgrown. Dog poop everywhere. There were notices about mosquitos and West Nile virus at the start of the trail. We decided to turn around 0.5 miles in and go up the mountain via a different trail. The only upside was the beautiful wildflowers.

A couple of things wrong with the map shown and directions to the trail head. First, the directions from the app drop you off into a nice court with no trail access. Even if you were to saunter between the homes, you won’t find the trail. Continue up Penesquitos Dr. and pull into Ave. Maria (no singing!). You will see a gate and a signage marking the entrance to the open space. A few of the trails on the map have been closed. They are marked as areas of “sensitive habitat” or have a fence blocking the way. You can still get to the summit. Just not as directly as shown. The trail was beautiful and rather empty from the Rolling Hills trailhead. I walked early in the morning, starting a little before 6am. I did not see any people until after I had been to the summit and was headed out. It was foggy until my hike ended so I didn’t get the views one would expect from the summit, but I love chaparral and so the hike was a delight regardless. Hiking boots would be recommended. The first half mile is covered in loose ready to move at slightest touch chunks of rock. I believe the erosion control plan might be to sprain and break hikers ankles so they just stop hiking...

Forgot to start recording, and skipped the climb up to the peak because one of the dogs was too tired, but it was a fun hike :) nice views but not much shade

Fairly straightforward evening hike. Steep and rocky in a few sections. Peak was covered in fog, so not much of a view, but I'm sure it is a great view of the city from up there. Only issue was a little stink from something rotting, all the way.

It's a fairly easy hike, moderately shaded (by SoCal standards:) ), gradual gradient, good steady cardio!

Not very crowded! Some parts pretty overgrown right now — pretty flowers though. Can be very steep, but rewards you with some great views.

The view was alright. A lot of loose rocks, but a good workout! Definitely want to wear hiking boots.

Great trail to get outdoors and have a fantastic view. Went on a day that was overcast, but be warned there is no shade. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes, this is a very rocky hike. Also a great hike for dogs! They must be leashed on this one. Most of it isn't overgrown but there are a couple parts where brush hangs over trail. Would definitely recommend and will be doing again myself!

I did not hike up to black mountain peak. I’ll hike back here regularly due to the close proximity to my home. Today was damp and actually rainy during the last 1.5 miles. The flowers are popping and there ya s way more growth this year fromnall the rain. The paths are still solid with minimal erosion from the rain. It was a beautiful trail today, however the only wildlife was a solo humming bird. It looked as though it had a red head although I didn’t get but a glance.

Hiked this last weekend and it was pretty easy! Not crowded at all but some some of the trail is very rocky so make sure you have the proper hiking shoes.

The East Ridge Trail is very overgrown until you hit Manzanita trail (only because of rain this year). From there it’s in great condition. As another person mentioned, I had to pull up the map when I hit housing development because there’s no obvious route.

When we came here it was super beautiful and green with wide trails and lots of pretty flowers! Brought our dog here on leash and he did very well on this trail and there were lots of other dogs too! Pretty steady incline and beautiful views at the top. Only negatives were there is almost no shade and it’s pretty rocky. Awesome hike, overall!

the black mountain service road portion (nighthawk trail) is kinda meh, but the miner's loop was really nice. I took it on a whim because it added a little distance and looked more green/single track. note: you can not get to the peak of black mountain as a loop without violating a closed area sign. I chose not to,and was glad for it. I explored miner's loop more instead and it's far better hiking than a just a service road. some mountain bikers without bells made it a bit hairy, but it was very enjoyable hiking. this was my first trip here, next time I will try to find alternate routes to avoid the service road.

Great trail to top of black mountain. Smoother and less steep than the north side trails

1hr 30min normal walk

Overall a well maintained trail. We got lucky with some colder San Diego weather so didn’t mind the lack of hiking in shade. We went on a Thursday morning and didn’t see hardly anyone except for the occasional mountain biker.
