Loved everything about it

I wanted to test out my new pack and poles. Nice day for a quick hike. I saw a young rattlesnake and a baby sunning themselves. A few raptors and a coyote in the distance. No cows, but plenty of evidence. Nice views, but think this trail would be prettier when everything is green.

Gorgeous scenery, varied foliage and flowers, and some beautiful rock paths. Great plant scents and grand vistas...even cows! An enjoyable spring hike.

Beautiful view especially at the beginning couple of miles. Going up the rose hill for a panoramic view of the rolling hills.

Great trail to do especially in spring or winter... Too hot and dry in summer.

As a fit hiker, I would not categorize this hike as easy. It starts with a gentle to medium climb on Stewartville trail with views of the rolling hills and without shade. Ridge trail gets a big steeper with amazing views of the valley and Suisun Bay. Chaparral Loop trail is about 50% in the shade and is on mostly rock slab which can be slick and tough to gain a foothold heading downhill in some places. The terrain and view on this trail is very different from the trail up. This is a good time of the year to enjoy the green rolling hills. Trails are well marked.

This was a nice hike and if I lived in the area I'd do it often, but it wasn't worth the 45-minute drive. There were tons of very cute cows blocking our trail and the recent rains combined with the cow hoofprints made it a muddy and uneven (but fun) experience. This is definitely a hike to do in winter and early spring as there is no shade and Antioch gets pretty hot in the summer/fall.

This trail is super fun! I brought my 4 year old niece w us and she did great! She did get tired towards the end and after she knocked out in the car lol... but, for people starting hiking, I would suggest it. I’m not in that great of shape and new to hiking and it’s a good starter trail.

The incline and rough terrain are a bit much to be considered easy. No strollers. Very petty hike and doable if you’re not avoiding inclines (my health app said we climbed 27 floors).

Great views!

Very scenic, you will not be disappointed! I love that I can bring my dog with me up there. I would bring a lunch and sit by the edge to enjoy the view for a few minutes before my trek back down. Bring good hiking shoes for grips....the path vary from smooth to rocky and uneven.

So beautiful!!!!!

Some steep parts but nothing to bad. Good trail for the pups and the cemetery is neat!

Awesome for families and pets! Great view points and panoramic views. Highly suggest for all ages and fitness levels

Great view from up here!!

My kids and I favorite trail here ❤️

Great trail, very scenic, definitely challenging. There is very little sun cover, so bring plenty of water and sun protection. When you get to the first fork, go straight instead of up the giant hill on the left, you have enough of a challenge later. Enjoy the views and the natural beauty because it is quite something out there. Be sure to keep an eye out for the ridge trail to loop you back to the cars (if you strictly follow the Stewartville trail signs, you will find yourself on a not so scenic 1.6 mile detour that is not worth it). Please note, that the ridge trail is definitely the challenging part of the "loop", so save some energy and water for it. Also be warned, if you're planning on bringing your dog, keep him/her on leash as we did encounter a rattlesnake today (this also being the reason for docking one star). Overall, we had a great adventure but were slightly unprepared. Enjoy!

Enjoyed this hike! Definitely has a few areas where you can go where it can be more challenging or easier depending on what you are looking for. Awesome place for pups! Only negatory would be the very few shade spots.

Did see a coyote on this trail. Not as well marked as other trails, but still a nice hike!

overall good but long day if you bring the kiddos. our little one, 8yrs had a couple break downs due to the heat but we ended up back at the car finishing 6.75 miles. Got a tad lost in the beginning, the trail wasn't clearly marked at the start. Nice views, would do again.

this was an ok hike..no scenery until you get to the other side of the mountain. over all good.

I truly enjoyed this beautiful place. We parked off of Frederickson in the parking area. There are no restrooms here, just a heads up. Ascending the Stewartville Trail, then winding left onto the Star Mine Trail at the camp area, you'll walk through the camp parking lot to continue. We went even further to the Oil Canyon Trail at Star Mine's end, to the upper Overlook, which is a fairly steep incline. It was lovely up there with a valley/delta view, but wires (and electrical noises) disrupt the view and sounds. Coming down, we hit the Stewartville Trail back, stopped to add Prospect Tunnel to our hike (+1.5 mi), then back to the parking area. The tunnel is great, you can walk inside, but I recommend a flashlight. There's a great variety of wildlife present throughout the preserve. Today, we spotted two coyotes from a pretty close distance at the summit of Star Mine.
From the parking lot and back, with all of the above, we timed at 4 hours exactly.

Good trail, did it with 10lb packs to give a couple people a "backpacking simulation". Good day!

The trail goes through 3 different old mining sites and the Rose Hill Cemetery. It as some pretty good hills and is on the upper side of moderate. I did it in late march so there were some wildflowers starting to bloom. Very good winter and spring hike and probably a 3 1/2 stars for me.

Good short hike for the winter months with good views and small hills that most people can do. Hard to believe the 1st time I did it was in '06. Once you get there there are many other options to stretch out your hike.
