Description

Under an hour and a half south of San Francisco, this beautiful rocky area juts into the ocean, attracting visitors from all around the world. The park is named Año Nuevo State Park (New Year's Point) for the day that Don Sebastian Vizcaino sailed by the point in 1603. This park is known mainly as the site of the largest mainland breeding colony in the world for the northern elephant seal. A short walk to the sand beach provides visitors with an area to view these spectacular animals. Visitors can view the elephant seals year-round, but depending on the season you will see different stages in the seals' lifecycle. A detailed description of what visitors should expect to see seasonally can be found here: https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=29375 Please note that from December through March, visitors can only access the park via guided walks.
