Nice hike, lots of wildlife, lots of dog poo right in the middle of the trail. Poorly marked at times, we definitely got ‘lost’ once. Saw a total of 8 other people. Would recommend and will be back for sure!

Did Holbert-National-Kiwanis today. I had done that trail before, but not in a few years. As many hikers know, Holbert is a little bit tough going up. Most times on Holbert, I have stopped at the lookout that is up about 1 mile. Today, I knew I had to reach End of Trail on Holbert, and then continue to National and Kiwanis. It was harder than I remembered! I actually fell off trail on Holbert while traipsing through the desert east of Dobbins Lookout and had to bushwhack up to the summit road, turn left and then hike up the road to the continuation of Holbert and then the link to National West. National is beautiful right there, sweeping within just a couple hundred feet of the radio towers that are visible from all over Phoenix. Kiwanis is essentially all downhill from right there, bringing an easy end to the difficult hike. Cactus flowers were out today! Fun stuff.

Cool trail but very easy to get lost There are no markings or cairns. I’m pretty sure we did get lost but somehow found our way back to National Trail thanks to GPS after climbing over and under various rocks The hidden valley feels like another world. The trek up Mormon trail to get there was quite the climb

Great trails in the park! Typical desert hike- bring plenty of water. There are lots of splits in the trail, and it's easy to end up hiking further than intended, and risking running out. Carry extra for your pups, too!!

Awesome incline here! A bit challenging and steep but perfect for a moderate work out. I saw 2 coyotes and loved the views. I would recommend the morning hours to hike here, as the shade is very scarce.

Good hike. Steep at the beginning but a nice break about halfway through. Ended the hike a little early so didn’t get to the top. I’d bring visitors to this trail. We didn’t see one person the entire hike. Very quiet

This is a really pretty hike that is easily accessible to people in central/south Phoenix. I come regularly just to get a nice workout in. It can be busy which is obviously not ideal.. but that’s the trade off for it’s great location. In the summer you will see tons of lizards. Chuckwallas, desert iguanas, zebra tails.. it’s flooded with them just keep your eye out. As for difficulty, it’s definitely not hard. I would rate it as moderate. All in all, great hike! The lookout unfortunately is crowded with tourists who drive up for the views. No avoiding that.

Yesterday I went only up. A lot of incline great work out. Was gonna do loop but decide to come back down. On warm morning and 1.3 mile incline is too much for me. Concern this as easy to moderate great sturdy rocks. Great view of Phoenix. Did total of 2.7 Miles

30 minutes flat, 40 minutes up to top

Gorgeous views with rock scrambling! This trail was unlike any other I’ve done with the valley. Lots of boulders around, and some that you have to climb over to stay on the trail. Certain parts of the trail are not clearly marked, so use the app map to stay on track. Cool photo opps on this one and nice views of the city! Downtown Phoenix is visible in the distance, and all in all a great workout that isn’t too strenuous.

Good hike the first 20 minutes or so are flat (good for running) and there are a few bikers but once you reach the incline it’s a good work out. The incline is nice and steady and the view is great at the top.

Beautiful views of the city. Stunning rock formations. Great trail but be ready to hike with lots of people! Very little shade.

Great workout and views! Loved it!

Didn’t see any dog poop that a few reviews mentioned. Bikers were courteous and I thought the trail was well- marked. Even without the All Trails app, I felt it the trail was very easy to follow and there were markers with M on them at places where the trail split.

It was hotter than we expected and I would definitely go earlier next time.

Not easy, but not crazy hard! Lots of stepping up, great views when you look back. We found a lot of little shady areas to take short breaks. I had to park down the street in an overflow lot, and we met at 10:00am.

Very scenic climb near the city. Challenging for people not used to the heat. Neat lizards and cactuses abound, as well as interesting rock formations.

Good hike!

Back to South Mountain today. I used to live there, three blocks from the trails, and I was on the mountain 2, 3, or 4 times per week. Alas, now I live away and I have to travel back to use the trails. Oh well, went back for a hike today. I had decided to take Kiwanis up to National to have a look at the radio towers, but I forgot the way to Kiwanis! I knew it was reachable from behind the Environmental Education Center, and wandered around there until I found Los Lomitas Trail. I remembered that one, even though I hadn't been on it in years. Started down the trail, and soon enough came to Hideout Loop. Hideout Loop leads to an old adobe house held within adobe walls. I believe that was built around 1938. It belongs to the City of Phoenix now, but it is quite striking. Walking to the front door, I found that locked, but right next to it was a side door that was open, allowing entrance to the house! It's pitch black inside, since the windows are all boarded up. I walked in a short distance and found in the front room bedding and empty bottles. There have been residents, or at least campers. I headed away from the Hideout and then found Kiwanis and started up, I have traveled down Kiwanis a few times, but this was my first time going up. It's probably not quite as easy as Alltrails makes it out to be, but it's fully manageable. A pretty trail with things to see. Well worth the hike.

Fun trail liked a lot about it - loved Fat Man's Pass. City view. Went on a weekday afternoon and it wasn't too busy. Small lot, backup parking on side roads. No restroom or fountain at trail head. Great urban trail - Hidden Valley makes you forget you're in the city for minute but little amounts of graffiti here and there pull you back to reality.

Annual hike when visiting the area. My kids and I love Hidden Valley and Fat Man’s Pass. Not terribly technical, but a good workout and great views of Phoenix.

Although the area is nice, it is very poorly marked. We were out to do this trail with our and ended up getting lost and having to retrace our steps multiple times to get back on the trail. There are many trails that intercept and is easy to end up on the wrong one since there are few trail markers past the first mile. Luckily we were using this app and were able to get back on the trail. When all was said and done, we hiked well over 10 miles on what was supposed to be a 4.7 mile hike. Make sure you bring plenty of water and a charged phone

Great hike with some good elevation gain and views.

This is easy to moderate. Some rocks I could not get down I had to sit and slide. Some narrow trail. A lot of incline great work out. I enjoy seeing few thing on this Hiking such as Tunnel/buildings/view of Phoenix. Will come back again

Nice trail, will be amazing when the saguaros bloom! The trail was longer than 15.2 miles. I hiked right at 16 out and back going almost but not all the way out.

Long and exhausting hike. Trail is wide and well kept. Not a ton of traffic (hikers) but since this is a dual trail there’s lots of mountain bikers, which sometimes tend to be rude. Aside from this the trail is challenging but not too technical. The views of city are spectacular, the rock formations, caves on trail are cool to see. One distinct difference between other trials in valley is the fact that there’s very little vegetation which means limited shade. Therefore bring plenty of water and sunscreen. I also recommend bug spray, there was a ton of mosquitoes which is unusual this time of year. Also, please pick up your trash, I was surprised how much garbage I saw along the trail.

I really like this trail. It has difficult parts but then theres flat areas so you can catch your breath. I can go up and come back down in an hour and a half maybe 2 hours if Im taking my time. Beautiful scenery, you go into the mountain and forget the rest of the world for a moment. I haven't done the loop just yet but Ive made it to the top and it is STUNNING!

Four of us late 50s and early 60s years of age hike this trail and loop! Loved the challenge of going straight up at the beginning and then the loop of Fat Mans Pass and the tunnels and rock formations! Would recommend plenty of water on this hike and stop when you need! Mostly enjoy the diversity of this hike!!

Definitely not EASY! I wanted to take my pup on his first hike and he was tired about halfway up, due to the steepness! It was undeniably a very beautiful hike and had clearly marked pathways!

Great trail, but once you get towards the point in the trail that takes you up to the lookout the path isn’t very clear. If you want to see the lookout there is a way to drive up to the top which had many tourists.

I love this trail and try to go with my dogs at least once a week. It goes back and forth between slightly steep inclines and level ground. For an inexperienced hiker, you may need to take a few breaks before reaching the top but it is definitely worth it. I usually am able to finish the entire hike in about 45-60 minutes if I am not rushing but going at a steady pace. I also will usually end right before the loop because its mostly flat and I don't feel as though it adds too much to my overall workout. With that being said, its definitely worth doing the loop at least once because there are a few cool rock formations to see. If you decide to complete the loop I recommend paying attention as its not incredibly well marked.
