This is primarily a four wheel drive adventure, with an easy wilderness hike at the end. Only short wheelbase, high clearance 4WD vehicles should attempt this. The road is very rough and signage is sparse. There are quite a few steep rocky washes that require slow and careful navigation. Panoramic views of the mountains in all directions and a real wilderness experience make the 141/2 mile off-road trek to the trail-head worthwhile.

Directions: From Phoenix, take I-10 west to exit 81, Salome Road, go west 9.6 mi. Turn right onto Eagle Eye Rd, go 3.7 mi, The 4WD trail is on the right, designated by a small brown BLM marker "FR 9349". Stay on FR 9349 for 13 miles, then turn left (north) onto an unmarked gravel road for another 1.5 mi to the trail-head gate. There is no BLM marker at the intersection, we built a cairn with a white cooler top to mark the turn. It takes 1.5-2 hrs to go the last 14.5 miles.
