So there actually is no trail from west glacier. I looked for a while, followed my gps to where is should have been, there’s nothing. Maybe past tree line there’s a bit of one, but honestly you don’t need one then. Spent a good 2 hours pulling myself up the side of the mountain by alder bushes. Expect to be climbing on all fours if you hike this trail.

I would not recommend the trail unless you plan to use the cabin. It's not terribly interesting compared to many others in the area.

Challenging hike. Slightly more difficult than I anticipated but well worth it. Trail is pretty wet until you get above the tree line. Cold and windy on top -jacket, hat and gloves in case you're delayed up there is always a good idea. Easy to get turned around especially when coming down. Look closely for orange tape in the trees marking the way. If you feel lost you probably are.....climb back up and locate the marker tape to get back on track. My phone battery died for a few minutes so my track says 9.7 miles. I think that's a little short .....felt like 11 miles to me:) I walked up on a porcupine that was so big I thought it was a bear at first. My "Lyft" was waiting for me at the bottom right when I finished so life is good. Now I'm going to sleep!

Great trail for a nice walk. Been here a few times and keep going back.

beautiful trail.... best in August

IMPORTANT. DO NOT FOLLOW THAT MAP THAT IS DRAWN ON HERE. You will not even be remotely close to the red line when hiking. I think they had some little kid just draw a squiggly line from point A to point B. Everything else was great. Plan on getting lost a few times. There is no longer a sign at the trailhead so you have to know when to turn left. Flags marking the way are sometimes fallen or unseen. Be sure to look both forward and backward to assure you know where you are going. Also the views on east glacier trail are phenomenal. I realize the people that have mapped it out below know what they are doing. Follow those instead

May 2017. The mileage is around 13miles round trip if you go all the way to the glacier. most trail guides only include the flat maintained trail to the washout. From the end of this easy trail (can bike on a town bike) you can see the glacier at a distance. if you want to get all the way to the ice, walk until the river meets the hillside and find a primitive trail marked by a single cairn and a orange tape on the brush. Follow this trail up and over the ridge. do not cross the river! once you get closer to the glacier, go along the left mountainside, left of the river. Once you get on this side it is a bushwack on a heavily over grown trail. Then you must cross steep rock slide areas to reach the glacier. once you get to the ice you'll need crampons to walk on it (it starts out steep). The biggest hazard on this route is steep/loose/slippery rock and difficult route finding. go prepared and have fun.

Up the whole way, I went with still a foot or two of snow on the ground. Kind of more tiring then it had to be, to cabin is awesome and I really enjoyed my experience. Didn't see any wildlife.

Stroller friendly, a really nice walk!

West glacier trail is nice and easy with a few nice viewpoints. No jokes about it, this is a long steep hard climb to the top. I was able to see Mt. Fairweather over the Chilkats. I dropped down and had lunch while looking at Mendenhall towers.

Easy trail, mostly through the woods. The last section to the glacier was flooded and inaccessible as of 7/03/16.

Worth the hike regardless.

Very flat and boring trail. Not much to see, your in the woods, few look outs on the river. Rest stop (bench) at 3.12 mile.

Easy hike through the end of West Glacier Trail, but once you're on Mt. McGinnis Trail, it's trail sniffing. Keep an eye on tape markers for it will help you navigate through the unmarked trail. Awesome views of Mendenhall Glacier and Mendenhall Valley. Dogs are allowed on the trail.

Beautiful trail. The end result is worth the seemingly flat first few miles. You'll come to the river where the trail starts to become a bit more rocky (while still flat) and then you will come onto a beach like area. This is a great place to rest and enjoy the beautiful view of the glacier and the river.

Great trail! Biked just about all the way to the glacier in around 30-40 minutes.

The glacier is receding so it's getting trickier to get up to it, but you can if you have time!

This is an easy ride. Long wide trail 90% of the way. As soon as you get to the river flats you have to get out on the sand to make the rest of the way to view the glacier. If you want to hike up to glacier you will hav e to leave your bike there and continue on foot.
