What a hike! Moderate is completely an understatement. We hiked this trail in May, 2018.

Ice is plenty think enough right now to walk across straight to the glacier. Fog made for a fun walk back, but the app made it very helpful staying on track.

great hike that's easy for a quick hike

We first did this hike in June 2018 with two other families, 5 kids and 5 dogs. Outstanding time was had by all. This is a must hike every summer! The views of the glacier are nothing short of astounding and the payoff at the lakes edge is spectacular!

Good views, you have to go on a few different trails to see all the different views

Easy trail IMO, less travelled even in the summer months, you can rent cabins along the trail. Rain jacket, mosquito repellent, and fishing rod are musts.

Beautiful trail with views that last for days. Portage Glacier has receded over time and the icebergs floating on Portage Lake are almost non-existent, but it’s still gorgeous!

November 14th, snowy but so fun! Beautiful sunny day out and easy loop!

November 9th, The most absolute beautiful hike over… Very steep was not prepared for that… But manageable! Take your time the view is beautiful the entire way!

beautiful trail. best of everything.

beautiful during winter. only could go to the falls outlook. couldn't go to the river because the way down was nothing but ice and wouldn't be able to make it back up.

Great hike! Blue glacier covered with snow but still a lovely hike with a great view! Very windy and Lots of ice today, minimal pockets of deep snow before you get to the pass. Started too late @ 1 pm and was nearly to the lake at 2:30. Had to turn around as it’s DST and after the sun went behind mountain at 3:30 things just became more dim. Got to my car at 4:30 very dusky & Probably dehydrated at that time. Remember to drink water when it’s cold outside. You need it and don’t realize it.
Gorgeous sunny day and only 4 people at the pass and no one else. The gentlemen said it’s a 4 hr hike minimum. 2 hrs there and 2 hrs back. Happy hiking!

Moderate is appropriate. It is challenging towards the top, but I carry an extra 40 lb with the baby carrier. Beautiful views.

Trail is in great shape. Beautiful hike. Travel wisely, thick bear country. I like to hike this after the leaves have fallen.

Trail-head parking was easy to find, and pretty empty before sunrise. Trail is pretty easy to follow and clearly marked at a few trail intersections, until you come to the moraine field towards the end. There are cairns throughout the boulder field, but its easy to get turned around. When in doubt, keep to the left side of the boulder field and keep your eyes pealed for the cairns. The little hut at the end can provide some cover for extremely windy days. No animal sightings :(. Great hike!

As advertised. It’s definitely on the harder-side of the moderate rating. Haha... its an Alaskan-moderate.

Quick beautiful hike. Definitely check the weather before you go because doing this trail after/during rainfall would make it a lot more dangerous. I would also consider it to be more moderate than easy. A little strenuous at times, but so worth it when you make it to the top.

awesome trail! the peak of the trail has an awesome look out! did the trail in October, and it was a little chilly at the top but just plan accordingly for the weather.

By far best trail I’ve been on , with multiple views , worth going to!

The toughest part of the trail is the beginning with a pretty steep elevation. The trail is well maintained but due to the small gravel type rocks traction is iffy. The payoff of the glacier and portage lake is so worth it though. Pack a lunch and find a nice secluded spot around the side of the lake to enjoy.

It was tough for me, but slow and steady wins the race! The view at the top is a fantastic-Turnagain Arm! Also a very nice, reasonably priced restaurant at the top.

Beautiful

great trail to hike. has some amazing 360 views of several small lakes, kenai, and skilak. we ended up going through the next valley and onto the next summit then even further away onto the next one. if you are confident I would recommend the extended trip. just adds to the fun. but the actual trip has some of the best views of most of the hikes in the area.

This hike was very beautiful, the lake was big with plenty of places to camp. I wish I brought a fishing pole!!

This review is from someone who tried to bike from Primrose trail head up to the lake and back. Apparently, most individuals who bike it prefer to start at the Lost Lake trail head and through bike up to the lake and down to Primrose. We kept wondering why everyone was passing us the opposite way. Otherwise, the rating would be different. We bit off way more than we could chew trying to bike up this way. We are definitely not very advanced mountain bikers and we had to carry our bikes up a lot of the steeper/root-filled sections. Didn't make for the most awesome experience. However, the views and riding at the top by the lake are phenomenal and the ride back down was most supreme. So, definitely don't recommend trying to bike up from Primrose unless you've got some experience and skill. Other than that the trail was absolutely wonderful!
