Easy peasy lemon squeezy. My fiancé and I hiked this with our yellow lab on a windy May afternoon. Took about 2 hours, but we didn’t go all the way to the end. You get great views of Turnagain Arm and other beautiful mountain ranges.

5 minutes outside of town, great little hike for the family. slight incline the first half mile, pretty mild after that.

WOW. absolutely amazing hike with incredible views. My boyfriend and I have gone on quite a few in the last week, and this one is our favorite!
The trail was well kept, but it did get mucky in some areas where the snow was still melting. I imagine it gets reallllly muddy after a good rain, so be aware. Also, there are a couple trail options: a windy switchback, and a straight uphill scramble that starts about 1/3 of the way in. We took the scramble up and the switchbacks down, which worked pretty well! 10/10 would recommend.

I used to guide backpacking trips on this trail when I was 18 and 19 (32 now!) The full hike was amazing, yes mosquitos, yes cold at night, yes very rainy- but totally worth it for the pristine wilderness and waterfall (see my b and w photo) hoping to go back next year and do this trail again :)

Nice and scenic trail with falls and streams. It is steep in some places but offers a lot of view and lots of areas of nice scenery. I would recommend this trail to people who like to be just far away from the city but not too far.

3.5 Didn't see any moose or bears. Saw a cute chipmunk and beautiful birds. Im from the Midwest so no way is this trail "flat" as others said. There are elevation gains but just enough to get your heart pumping. I would NOT rate this easy. It's moderate. A few spots where you can see the water and on a clear day, the mountain range across the water.

Biking today - beautiful weather great sunshine! Rode up about 4 miles saw a few bear scats and two overnight bear sleeping areas. Decided to play it safe and not venture too far. Trail design seem used as much this year as last year - after 2 miles a lot of overgrown brush and narrow path.

This is a wonderful mellow trail with some elevation gain. Currently, 7/15/17, the trail leads comfortably to the lake (~3mi). At the lake, the trail continues but is very bushy and raw. Enjoy!!

I was sooo looking forward to doing the his trail but I didn't have cash on me and it's a $5 self park lot so... I'll have to go back, with cash in hand.

AMAZING views!

fun trail! shorter than anticipated if you do the first, small loop (1/2 mile total). clockwise, it's uphill then down. there's an opportunity to add another 2.9 miles (each way) to the loop.

Easy trail, $5 for parking, bathrooms on site. After the first 1/2 mile or so it levels off pretty nice. Nothing too steep or crazy. Several good areas offer great views of the water. A few people said they saw a few bears in the area however we didn't see them. So just be careful. Trail goes all the way to McHugh Creek so you'll have several miles of nice views and very wooded.

This is a great hike, if you happen to be in this area of Kenai. The hike to the upper lake is well worth the effort. The trail continues well beyond the upper lake. I might map it and log it on All Trails the next time I am in the area. This is an area with LOTS of bears! Be aware!

While you are doing this hike, take the slight detour, and see Russian River Falls. The falls are nothing spectacular, but this is where the salmon move upstream, and where lots of bears go to feed on them.

Nice trail with a few good look outs. Saw a moose and a black bear with a cub well off the trail. Muddy patches, but totally passable. Lots of people on this trail.

Beautiful ⛰

Saturday, April 29, 2017

Hiked this July 2013 and it was extremely grown over. Lots of bushwhacking and a billion mosquitoes. Beautiful spots to camp, plus successful lake fishing. We camped at one of the sites near the lake. Didn't go the full 20 miles but did about 9 miles round trip. Recommend!

in all honesty we didn't hike the trail. we hiked down to the river from the campground, not using the paved area to get to the river. went salmon fishing, saw bears eating down below where we were fishing. the hike we took to the river was down the side of the gorge, at a good 60 degree down angle if not more, and had a blast going to and getting from the river to fish for salmon.

I hiked this trail October1, 2016. My GPS measured it as 3.75 miles to the near edge of the lake. it was an overcast day, but very calm when I arrived. I got some fantastic reflection pictures because the water was so calm. I hiked about half way to the other end of the lake, and found several good vantage points for photos. The weather started to change, so I turned back at the point where the trail met a large Boulder face. This was elevated and had a view of a water cascade on the opposite side. Not many people on the trail at this time of year, very pleasant.

A rainy day, but great. At the river/waterfall, we saw the spawning salmon swimming up the falls!

Wife, daughter and I were camping in another campground and decided to do this one in order to see the falls. We enjoyed the environment. Paths were very clean and easy to identify and walk on. We reached the falls which we thought were going to be slightly bigger but like them nonetheless. We also too another trail that was labeled for a fishing area and got to see the lower river area too. Weather was good and just a cool little trail to hike.

The section from McHugh Creek to Potter Marsh was closed today (5/31/16) due to a bear feeding on a moose kill.

Trail is moderate with some AMAZING views. Not much elevation. The lake is beautiful but be sure to pack some bugs spray.

A very pretty hike done on a very pretty day. Easier coming out, as it in mainly downhill. I overnighted at the lake and watched a gorgeous sunrise. With a 40 lb pack and my dog, it took us 2 hours to hike in and 1.5 hours to hike out.

Saturday, May 14, 2016

We didn't go all the way, only about 2 miles out and back, but it's a fairly easy trail. We went in mid spring and there was an avalanche blocking the path so that was fun to go over.
