How Long is a Long Time Ago? Russell Cave is an archaeological site with one of the most complete records of prehistoric cultures in the Southeast. Thousands of years ago a portion of Russell Cave's entrance collapsed, creating a shelter that, for more than 10,000 years, was home to prehistoric peoples. Today it provides clues to the daily lifeways of early North American inhabitants dating from 10,000 B.C. to 1650 A.D.

Nice short trail at an interesting historical location. Nice mesh of birds. The trail was paved but often with a lot of moss which makes it not entirely safe when it is wet.

Steep in some places. Was misty and a little wet today. Glad I had my poles for the steeper parts. Cave is very cool looking. Had both Kinglets. Downey, pileated, yellow bellied and red bellies woodpeckers. Both nuthatches. C wren, chickadee and t titmouse.

It’s fine.!

Good little workout on a nice trail, but it needs some general maintenance to prevent being overgrown.

Short walk, but straight up and then straight down: Wear good shoes

This trail was a good workout on the incline. Coming back down was really steep and I think as hard as going up.

Wasn't a bad trail. The scenery was pleasant and the inclines were a great workout. Going down seemed harder than going up. Was disappointed that with all the animals that are supposed to be there I only came across a cornsnake. Saw lots of butterflies and moths. One section of trail was broken. Overall, can be strenuous for those not used to a lot of inclines.

A great hike up the side of the mountain and back down. I had 3 kids with me ages (2-4). They struggled a little with the incline, but did great on the way back down. If you have younger kids, I would recommend cutting through the nature trial sections to avoid the steeper incline. It was hard on my youngest. Beautiful walk through the woods.

It was a short trail mostly paved. You are not allowed to enter the cave which was a disappointment.

Walk to the cave is very short although the woman in the visitor center was very nice and informative. The Native American mannequins in the cave just make it cheesy.

Very cool cave, but exploring is very limited. Oh, and there are Native American statues that take away from the cave

The cave is amazing and the rangers on site are very knowledgeable about its history. The cave is definitely worth a visit. That being said, the nature trail itself is nice but nothing spectacular. You could get to the cave via another trail and bypass the nature trail altogether and you wouldn't be missing much.
