#3 - GR®131
Corona Forestal Natural ParkLength: 54.5 mi • Est. Multi-day
In the Canary Islands from La Esperanza to La Orotava, this route runs almost entirely through forest tracks with gentle slopes between the historic pine and laurel forests of Tenerife, which is a type of tropical forest that once covered much of the island. There are also narrow nature trails, brushwood, and more enclosed wilderness areas to explore.
This is the section between La Caldera and the visitor center at El Portillo in the volcanic Teide National Park.
On this hike, you will have the opportunity to see the La Orotava Valley and the island of La Palma. You will arrive at a place known as the Fuente del Pino or Dornajito. From there, connecting with the PR-TF-35, the trail enters a pine forest with thick undergrowth.
In this first part of La Orotava, the markers will indicate the boundary between the public land and the forest along the fence of the private farms. Little by little, the forest is transformed into a laurel forest, dominated by "Faya", heather and other characteristic species of laurel, such as the strawberry canary. As you climb, the journey will take you to an increasingly dense pine forest with species of shrubs typical of these heights, such as Teide, broom and Codeso.
The point where the forest ends is where the climb to the El Portillo visitor center in Teide National Park begins.
