Length: 5.8 mi • Est. 3 h 40 m
This trail within the Natural Park begins near the Montserrat Monastery. The path takes you through the forest, which gradually turns into stone peaks. Sant Jeroni is the highest point of the Montserrat mountain. The top or summit of Sant Jeroni offers excellent views of villages and a steep descent. The path is in good condition with a positive slope, although a couple of hiking poles could give us a hand. Bring water and enjoy the breathtaking views! If you prefer to shorten this path, you can take the Sant Joan funicular.Show more

The route to the Monastery of Montserrat begins in Collbató, a municipality in the province of Barcelona, and continues along a forestal path to where you will find a slope. The trail is well indicated at all times and is very busy throughout the year. The route begins in Collbató and continues towards the Mare de Déu de la Salut Hermitage that dates from the second half of the 19th century, has its origin in the old medieval church of Santa Maria known since the 18th century as Santa María de health. The hermit was destroyed during the Civil War of 1936-39 and was rebuilt again after the war. Then you climb to a height of 720 meters above sea level until you reach the monastery of Santa María de Montserrat, a Benedictine abbey located on the mountain of Montserrat. Legend has it that they found the image of the Virgin of Montserrat around the year 880. Starting the cult of La Moreneta, which materialized in the first four hermitages in the 9th century: Santa María, San Acisclo, San Pedro, and San Martín. From here the descent back to Collbató begins, passing by the Cross of San Miguel, a monument from 1962, the work of Josep M. Subirachs and dedicated to San Miguel, Patron of Montserrat. On the cross, the meaning of the name of the archangel Saint Michael, which means "Who is like God?" Is engraved in several languages. It is very common to find the typical mountain goat of the area, so be very attentive! The entire route has spectacular views, although the panoramic view from the Mirador de la Cruz de Sant Miquel is especially recommended.Show more

Length: 4.8 mi • Est. 3 h 15 m
Starting from the Montserrat Monastery, the beginning of the trail is not easy to find and the parking lot is usually full very early in the morning, so it is recommended to get up early to do this route. This path could be turned into a loop using both the GR-96 and GR-5. This route (GR-96) is slightly steeper and goes directly to the top of Montserrat, while the GR-5 curves a bit around the mountain before reaching the top of the mountain of Montserrat. Legend has it that they found the image of the Virgin of Montserrat around the year 880. Starting the cult of La Moreneta, which materialized in the first four hermitages in the 9th century: Santa María, San Acisclo, San Pedro, and San Martín. The GR-96 is one of the oldest documented routes in Europe. It was used by pilgrims to go to the sacred mountain of Montserrat. You can also use this path to start the route to Sant Jeroni.Show more

Montserrat could be considered the most famous hike in Catalonia. The trailhead is hard to find. There may be no parking at the trailhead so most visitors prefer to take public transportation, train, or bus into the area and then walk to the trailhead. Visitors traveling with their own cars could probably park in town and walk to the trailhead. This route could be done in a loop using the GR-96 path. It is slightly steeper and climbs straight to the top of Montserrat, while the GR-5 curves around the mountain a bit before reaching the top. In front of the Museum of Montserrat, you can take the San Juan Funicular to get to the top of the mountain or the Santa Cova funicular, which will take you to the Santa Cova de Montserrat, where the image of the Virgin was found in 880, the origin of her cult and her consecration as the patron saint of Catalonia.Show more

Montserrat has to be one of the most visited locations in Catalonia offering many hiking routes for all levels. This particular route to Santa Maria Montserrat (Abbey of Montserrat) starts at the village of Collbato. From here the route straight away takes a climb upwards, once half way up, the path then runs along the edge of the mountain. After about the first hour into the route, the path then makes a sudden climb up to the final top. Once reaching the top and keeping to the right the path then takes you round to Santa Maria Montserrat. This route without taking any rest breaks takes about an hour and half from Collbato to Santa Maria Montserrat. Once at the Abby this particular route then goes back down to Collbate the same way as you come up. Overall: a great three and half hour hike up to one of the most famous spots in Catalonia.Show more
