Awesome trail to the melting and famous Franz Josef Glacier. If trail running (or just in general) be careful on the second half up to the glacier as it is rocky and uneven with a few river crossings. Gorgeous 3+ mile run with hills and obstacles. Obviously very popular so better in the morning or off season. I went in the rain and had a blast! Global warming is alarming here, and the most evident ive ever seen with my own eyes. This is point source to its finest. Sad, and yet so true.

No glacier view, closed because of landslide

The track is open and beautiful with lots of birds snd nature. The view at the end is amazing. Unfortunately the helicopters flying noisy all the time above the track, therefore I am not fully fan of the track We did the track with our kids 7/9 in 6,5h and can not fully recommend the track for persons with short legs due to rocks and slippery surfaces.

a bit crowded. recommend going early in the morning. very nice walk if you don’t mind the constant buzz of helicopters. makes you sad about climate change though

forget about the tunnel... we started the walk with our kids (7/9) by sunset, got wet feet in the tunnel as expected and found finally lots of glowworms and an possum in the forest on the way back

My favorite hike on the South Island! ❤️

The hike is open again. Make sure you are kitted out. Not easy as it is long. Views awesome Great achievement

Clean and easy to follow. The trail is past raging River and up to the glacier. Second to none. Enjoy before it is to late

Beautiful hike with beautiful nature and lots of firefly-action! Unfortunately, the exit of the tunnel was closed ... Still recommended!

Great hike and very well maintained trail. Don’t forget to pack your rain gear!

Easy hiking, under a beautiful sun for the part. Beautiful waterfalls to see! Unfortunately, the glacier seems far away since it melts from year to year ...

Beautiful trail with two lookouts at 2.5 miles (4km) and 3.5 miles (6km) up. Both had a spectacular view of you are wanting something shorter. Nothing quite beats the view at the top of the glacier and peaks and the view of the rest of coast just slow the top on the trail. Make sure to get out before the clouds roll in because it could lead to a blocked view of the glacier. It took us just over 3 hours to get up and 2:15 to get down (with plenty of picture and snack breaks)

Currently closed due to flood damage on the bridge. Keep checking back!

Great views of the lake and its mirror reflection. Mostly an easy walk but there are some steps to climb to lookout points. The so-called view of views needs a trim as the foliage obscures part of the reflection. Amazing views from reflection island. Great gift shop at the end by the car park too!

OPEN!! Road repairs on going but open, great walk and got closer then expected to glacier

Beautiful views along the way and the forest is super unique ! A lot of rocks and roots along the trail which makes it more fun and keeps your mind going during the **17 km** trail, but the grade isn’t that bad and it’s not a relatively hard hike. But it’ll get your blood flowing and the views of the glacier, mountains, and ocean at the top are so worth it!!

great hike !!! with even better views. went during winter time in August 2018 and the trial was a bit muddy near the summit but was able to walk around it. and snow at the summit (bring a spare pair of socks just in case). weather was comfortable for shirt and shorts. from start to return took 4hrs

Nice walk, bring shoes that you're okay with getting wet. You have to go all the way to the end if you want to see lots of glow worms.
