Great to do with Maori guide. Great mineral deposits in the rivers. Unfortunately, too cloudy to see the mountains.

Easy to follow trail, gorgeous views, informative signposts about the trees and so many beautiful birds! A lovely stroll.

This is a truly spectacular trail that takes you through an amazing variety of landscapes and scenery. Forests, rolling hills, steep mountains, desolate lava rocks, stunning lakes, majestic waterfalls. You name it, this trail likely has it. I did the trail in about 3 days, staying the first night at Oturere Campsite and the second night at Mangatepopo Campsite. I think going anti-clockwise was definitely the way to go. I stayed at the Skotel Tongariro the nights before and after the hike. I will say, though, that it should probably be marked “Difficult” instead of “Moderate.” I’ve done many of AllTrails’ difficult hikes, and this was by far the most challenging trail I’ve done. If I were to do it all again, I think I would have done it in 4 days instead of 3. I took some online advice to go straight from Whakapapa to Oturere, skipping the first hit and campsite. While not skipping the first hut would have made for a short day 2, skipping it made for a VERY long day 1, and I was quite ready for a break by the time I got to that first hut. I also MIGHT consider skipping the stretch between Mangatepopo and Whakapapa and just catching a shuttle from the Tongariro Crossing trailhead back to Whakapapa. That stretch of trail was by far the least scenic, and was amazingly unkept. You are literally walking through 1 meter deep trenches for large chunks of it.

Great day hike. Well maintained trail however tons of people. Lakes are beautiful but never touch them. They are sacred to the Maori. Amazing how many hikers don't know this or don't care. Bring layers, rain gear, at least 2 liters of water and lunch. In my opinion, this trail is not difficult at all... It's just a bit long for most (12+ miles).

Super busy. Paid for the shuttle $35nzd per person to take you from the parking lot to the beginning of the trail.

Super hike but quite demanding in places. A bit of climbing and scrambling required. Wouldn’t do it when wet. Great variety and views. We just did Lake Surprise and back

Lake Rotop

Phenomenal landscape! Challenging in some sections, however, worth every step and emotion. Highly recommend!

great hike but too many people on the crossing.

Trail is a freeway compared to trails in Washington state. Miles of trail mat. Which is very nice on the feet. Coming off the top you have a 350foot scree slide down the trail

Lovely trail. Closer to 4 miles than 3.5. Mostly wooded, lots of ferns. Good signage for plant identification.

Awesome great alpine level walk with spectacular lakes and scenery.

I did this hike in March in 3 days instead of 4 and could of done it in 2 days. It is awesome! I did it anti clockwise so I did the summit at the beginning of the second day. Be aware that there is a LOT of people on the Tongariro crossing so leave for the summit very early in the morning. But the view is stunning and I’d do it again!

I haven't done this hike, but for those who don't know, the volcano in the center of the loop, Mt. Ngauruhoe, is Mt. Doom in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Volcanos, craters, tussock- what more could a girl ask for! such an amazing hike. We took our time and explored a bit so finished in 5 days. We started first with the Alpine crossing. This part is steep. very steep. I was also using my hands to walk I was at such an angle. Lots of rocks so be careful of your ankles and knees on this one. Did the optional Glacier lake on day five, but this is all scree and pretty steep. Worth it!!!

Amazing trail. Beautiful landscapes from Mars like terrain to green moss forests. Highly reccomend and in a tent is better than the cabin personally.
