Amazing 4 day tramp with stunning views all around. Went the opposite way to the norm starting at Whanganui hut. Ascended the mountain day 3 and saw the bluffs on day 4 when packs were lightest and views were the most stunning (ending the trek on a high). Weather varied, sunny and hot day 2, freezing and snow day 3-4 up at Panekire hut. Bring warm clothes and a warm sleeping bag For just incase, we were freezing all night and wood was too damp to start a fire :(

Really cool walk - did this with my wife over 2 nights / 3 days. We got the water taxi to the north of the lake ($80pp) and then walked anti-clockwise. The lake is stunning and the track runs alongside before heading up in to hills. Beautiful views for the top. Parts of the track a bit muddy but nothing to strenuous. We had amazing sunny weather the whole time we were there - really made the difference!!!

We did it with kids age 11 and 12, going up was not easy, but enjoyed great views.

The views are amazing ! But disappointed with the water taxi over charging $110 for a 15 min ride in a fishing boat .

Awesome north island hike!

A phenomenal well rounded Great walk.

Ascended long up from Onepoto slow and steady with tree roots being the pathway’s staircase. Beautiful old trees and stunning lake views. Panikere Hut first night. Viewed Sunrise from the approach stairs. Easy walk next day to Waiopaoa Hut so left packs there and visited Korokoko waterfalls as wouldn’t have enough Time our last day because got picked up by water taxi at 3 from Mauititi Hut. 4th day we would have completed but not enough time. Lots of very steep path and steps going other way from Waiopoa Hut to Panikere so kind of pleased started at Onepoto. Extremely beautiful walk and great huts.

Did this over three days, missing the ascent due to three 6 yr olds in our group. Had a fantastic time, the scenery is incredible. One of the kids caught a decent sized trout just with a spinning rod while we were having a rest. Plenty of wildlife. The huts we stayed in were great...in fact one of them was more like a lodge! One of NZ's great walks!
