#1 - Tholen To Bath Over Oesterdam
Oosterschelde National Park

Length: 13.6 mi • Est. 5 h 43 m
This trail is over the Oesterdam. It may seem boring to walk over a dam for 11 km but, the views over the Scheldt plains make you forget the time. Start in Tholen, on a fairly unknown trail. Two beautiful mills, the town hall, and the Grote Kerk, adorn the city. It is quiet on the island of Tholen, especially on Sundays. Via the Rijn Schelde Canal, walk to the Oesterdam. It is the longest dam of the Delta Works. The dam serves to keep the brackish (Ooster) Scheldt water outside the rest of the Netherlands. It is unbelievable that so much effort has been made to make this more brackish: dams, movable barriers, but now we see a beautiful nature area with swallows at low tide and many birds. Via two large streams, come again along the Scheldt Rhine Canal and along which another auxiliary dam. Below the Bergse Sluizen is the drowned city of Riemerswaal. It used to be the third largest city in Zeeland, but due to the floods and the 80-Year War, there is nothing left of this illustrious town. The Oesterdam ends at Beveland. Zeeland is at its narrowest here, so that the rail and traffic bridges are close together. The stage ends in Bath, a place of nothing, but it is very beautiful on the Westerschelde with a view of the industry of Belgium and the drowned land of Saeftinghe.Show more

A beautiful forest path takes you to the Philips dam, where the west side contains salt water and the east side fresh water. After the dams you walk over the dikes along the Scheldt-Rhine Canal. You end in the beautiful town of Tholen, which received city rights in 1366.Show more
