I never hiked it but I heard this trail is haunted. A Japanese man in a suit with an umbrella appears often on the trail and then disappears suddenly.

This is probably the sketchiest trail I’ve ever hiked. It is barely maintained, there are rock/mudslides all over the place. A decent portion of the trail follows a sketchy ridge, the mud is insane, the loose rocks and roots will roll your ankles, and it is too easy to get lost on the lower section. Not recommended for beginners. All that said, if you are an experienced hiker in Hawai’i Nu’uanu is a great, uncrowded trail with some amazing views. There is much to see along the way, including some very unique old growth. The biggest pine and eucalyptus trees I’ve ever seen.

I think this trail is incorrectly labeled. The majority of the hike is just Kalawahine and Manoa Cliff Trail, you only traverse about 10% of the Puu Ohia trail and it doesn’t even take you to the Mount Tantalus Lookout. I would call this “Kalawahine to Telephone Road Loop”. Having done all of the tantalus trails, the only new segment of this trail to me is the Telephone Road part which was actually kinda cool, some old paving the entire way! Kalawahine is in full bloom, so much more verdant than it was in the spring! It took me just about an hour to do the loop. Quite muddy, prepare to get dirty! Very few people on the trails today. The tantalus trails are actually still open despite the C&C covid hiking restriction since they are out of the jurisdiction.

So muddy you can pretty much use the trail as a slide to which my mom did and I did cry laughing but we couldn’t make it up.... looked amazing tho. Be prepared to get maddddddd dirty

Aug. 7th- still pretty muddy, slippery. Saw a bunch of people on the trail with their pets. Definitely more of a nature trail. Still nice!

Caught it dry and beautiful (late July) It’s a healthy climb and if you catch it on a clear day (we did) it’s worth every bit of the climb. The trail is well marked and easy to keep your bearings. It doesn’t hurt that the trail already starts from a high elevation (Tantalus) so you don’t have to hike it from sea level.

Muddy at the top, be prepared. Bring 4 liters if water minimum. Not for novice hikers

Great views and plenty of shade. If you continue on to the peak it does get muddy in some areas with lots of tree roots. Overall one of my favorite hikes.

I somehow thought that it wouldn’t be that muddy since it hadn’t rained in Honolulu despite all of these reviews saying it would be extremely muddy. I was wrong. IT WILL BE EXTREMELY MUDDY! Great hike though... gets a little dicey near the top. I was able to jog to the end of the Paoa flats but then the inclines start to get a little too steep to jog, and eventually by the end, it becomes a four-limbed climb. For my final ascent to the K2 peak, I disappeared into the clouds and the view was obscured. Coo experience, but be prepared to be caked in mud head to toe.

Was a great hike, one of the best parts was the friendly pig in The parking lot. He’ll come right up to you and squeal delightfully when you pet him. We grabbed a few mountain apples on the hike and brought them back to him which he enjoyed thoroughly.

Beautiful views steep cliffs and dangerous drop offs once you get past the bench over looking the Pali not too difficult if you’re fit and take it slow! Trail was really muddy right now take extra steps to be safe! Great hike!

Parking is to the left right before the gate. The gate is closed but there is a trail off to the side that leads to the heard if the trail. I suggest making a left when deciding which side of the loop to do first unless, you want an uphill hike then make the right. Make sure to apply bug repellent especially if mosquitos are attracted to you.

The All Trails recording for this is wrong, and is the reason that it seems very overgrown. Make sure when the all trails map forks off to the left over the stream, that you head up right up the ridge. This is the correct path and is a lot less overgrown and less of a scramble. Some of the most beautiful plants I have ever seen are on this hike, even saw some parrots! Be prepared for mud.
