Description

The Kellerwald-Edersee National Park is located in the north Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg. It is part of the Kellerwald and since 2011 its beech forest has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The old beech forests are preserved and protected on 5,738 hectares. They invite you to idyllic walks and eventful hikes that can lead to some beautiful mountain tops. The national park is the heart of the green north of Hesse. Visitors can obtain in-depth information about the Kellerwald in the National Park Center. Here awaits a building with striking architecture, unusual exhibits and a unique 4D cinema experience. There are also artistic productions and entertaining exhibits that provide insights into the wilderness of the basement forest. The visitor center is open from November to March from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. (Tuesday to Sunday) and from April to October from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (daily).

Start the route at the National Park parking area "Elsebach" near Schmittlotheim. The arnica flower leads the way up to the Fahrentriesch. At every turn, you are accompanied by remnants of heath, old trees from forest-grazing and narrow paths as witnesses of historical agricultural land use. The old landscape at the Fahrentriesch, with its rare Nardus grassland, is to be preserved in the long-term.Show more

Nice round trip around the Edersee, with usually little traffic. Only 2 short sections on federal roads, otherwise rather quiet. Gradients are all easily manageable max. 10%. Due to the length only recommended on warm days. The HM displayed are around 1300 in real terms.Show more
