Description

The Pyrenees National Park was established in 1967. The park is located in the Occitane and Nouvelle-Aquitaine regions, in the western part of the Pyrenees chain, just on the border with Spain. The Pyrenees National Park is made up of two zones called the "heart of the park" (area of 45,707 ha) and the "adherence area" (206,352 ha). While the heart of the park is strictly protected by law, the area of compliance with the more flexible regulations benefits from economic, social and cultural investments which aim to preserve the heart of the park by curbing the rural exodus while promoting tourism in the region. It is a high mountain national park. The heart of the national park has an altitude ranging from 1,067 meters to 3,298 meters (Pique Longue du Vignemale). Its landscapes are very varied and include the limestone massif of Gavarnie, the granite mountain of Cauterets, the ancient volcano of the Pic du Midi d'Ossau and also the Aspe valley and its forest. The rich fauna of the park includes: brown bear, Iberian ibex, isards, marmots, raptors including the Golden Eagle, many invertebrates and also other rodents. Regarding the flora, the Pyrenees National Park has more than 2,500 higher plant species.
