Length: 5.6 mi • Est. 3 h 10 m
This route takes in several of the highlights of Kinder Scout - the Woolpacks, Noe Stool and of course Jacob's Ladder (part of the Pennine Way). The views are of course extraordinary once you have gained the height to look across a vast amount of the Peak District from it's highest mountain. On a day with good weather this walk is wonderful as you walk up the path of Crowden Brook and then up to the Kinder Scout plateau. However, on days where there is mist, cloud and rain it's a very different proposition and calls for the correct clothing and navigation to avoid problems.Show more

In 1932 a group of 500 people, for the most part from Manchester, trespassed en masse and walked from Hayfield to Kinder Scout. Why? Their aim was to secure access rights to open country for all. Forever. Walking this route we can see why they did this and feel gratitude for what a few achieved for the many to come.Show more

On Sunday 24 April 1932, a young Mancunian mechanic called Benny Rothman defied police and gamekeepers to lead hundreds of walkers onto the Kinder plateau. The Kinder Trespass, as it became known, earned Benny 4 months in jail. This walk takes in all of the best bits of the plateau, the Downfall, the highest point at the misleadingly named Kinder Low and you also get to traverse much of the impressive southern edges with stunning views over Edale, not to mention the weathered rocks called the Wool Packs. The plateau is as you will discover - not just boggy, but riddled with groughs (peat troughs cut by streams that make for arduous up-down walking), but don't let this put you off because Kinder sports some of the wildest and view-laden walking in the National Park.Show more
