Situated in northwest Jutland, Thy National Park is a beautiful nature preserve and the oldest national park of Denmark. Due to overexploitation of the land it was transformed into drifting sands. In 1800 the area was replanted in order to stop the drifting, work which took a century to get result. Today the park consists primarily of windy dunes and meadows littered with rare plants and even rarer birds. The park also has some historical sites dating from prehistoric times and WWII including graves, bunkers, a fortress, and batteries. Some of the buildings are open to visitors.
